Too many cooks spoil some porridge. Many ingredients not necessarily. Especially if they are exquisite. In the Spanish skies over California, the four guys from Dredg have resorted to their new album a huge wealth of musical ingredients. And they had a good recipe. Similar to the test kitchen at "eat and drink" is made seemingly unusual ingredients in the end no musical noodle soup originated, but landed a formidable result on the (plate) plates. It's amazing how smooth blend diverse soundscapes into the overall concept: Gregorian chant fragments Wassergluckern, distorted airplane pilot tower correspondences, medieval Dulcimerklänge, Eastern European women's choirs, a cappella choruses in the style of the Renaissance, Impressionist, slightly oblique piano painting, oriental Scales, crude rhythm changes, cello passages, Elektronikgeplucker, short-term approaches of breakbeats, orchestral timpani, strings ... the list goes on and on. But in all of these ingredients can be found on this record but one thing: More than veritable rock music! And thanks to the various additional ingredients an extremely versatile, complex and yet very homogenous plate. Not to deny on this album the slope to hymn-like, to maintain the band. After peaceful, more delicate verses eventually breaks out the pathos volcano and throws the listener into the sky full of violins and breitwandiger harmonies. Above all emblazoned the voice of singer Gavin, the (formerly Life of Agony) is settled perhaps vocally between Morten Harket of A-ha and Keith Caputo. There are times of the guitar strings almost held liable, sometimes tender plucked sounds, sometimes schrammelig, and sometimes distorted breitwandig almost similar to the early U2. The basis of it all is the incredibly creative, powerful and at the same time delicate drumming that holds the dynamic threads sovereign in hand. To draw comparisons to other bands is difficult if the independence of this work. In his penchant for pathos and sweeping choruses with a penchant for hymn-like, Dredg are near the famous also Sigur Rós, albeit much more vital and more agile. At the same time makes you feel the best moments of the Rocks the 80s remembers (to it have indeed given). Times a Keith Caputo like scales falling from his hair, sometimes waving? A Perfect Circle? from the next window, sometimes pushing Coldplay a melancholy greeting through the mail slot. The versatile rhythms of Tool and Peter Gabriel bop together in the dining room. Even the Progressive rock is located on the family tree. Although Dredg extremely unpretentious deal with this genre. It is not about to pack as many clock and keys in as long as possible and sweeping epics, it is not about the volume, or speed Virtuositäts- Olympus. The Frickelfaktor almost goes towards zero. It was not the first set of key ideas (FIS Phrygian maybe ???) or clock (we had long not 5/8 clock more!) There, but the musical ideas. The individual effects are homogeneous components of the whole. The pieces are very versatile and smart arrange, but kept harmoniously quite simple at the same time. As a conclusion for me is an absolute recommendation to all the people who are musically curious, open to new ideas, without wishing to be involved with avant-garde sound experiments. Very good rock music, dynamically versatile and multifaceted and incredibly homogeneous. From the spaceship and into the Spanish sky!
