Sigh! Is that a beautiful, romantic, sugar sweet, witty, excellent written lace Heyer novel! I never thought that I could still discover a novel by her after my varied experience with the Grande Dame Georgette Heyer, who lets enraptures me such and melt away. Even better was the surprise when I came across this charming story.
Arabella and Beaumaris are absolutely hilarious and aptly drawn characters. But father, mother, brother, uncle, or godmother, yes every little minor character (Leaky Peg, the guy on the box, the butler, etc.) offers the astute and whimsical drawing of her character. They are all so aptly and amusingly portrayed that their dialogue is the purest pleasure and you fall in love inevitably in each one of them.
However, the best character is undisputed Ulysses, his sign an ugly but extremely affectionate mongrel who probably creates in this story the greatest social advancement - the mangy street dog for pampered lapdog of the biggest trendsetters in the city.
Who can read all dry eye who has no heart and no sense of humor; o).
Conclusion: My dearest Heyeer - so far.
The book is in a very good German translation under the title of having "the charming Arabella".
