Aspects of ordinary life

Jane and Prudence are two women friends, blackberry thirty in England after the war. They are both friends since college and graduate of Oxford. Jane married a pastor and leads a life punctuated by provincial teas and luncheons that are given at various parish occasions. She will not rest until her friend to marry Prudence and submit eligible bachelors. Prudence lives in London and works in replay events for a rather dull professor whom she secretly believes in love.

Barbara Pym is supreme in his careful description and apparently light of the lives of these two women to the dreams stifled by the narrowness of their lives, routines and conventions. She excels in describing the small acts of cowardice and small betrayals of ordinary life. If his look is not kind to men, it does not save much for his female counterparts in their race to the husband. Its tangy humor is more palpable than openly displayed and this is what makes the great charm of his writing. Serve wholeheartedly.
