The opener is how often an instrumental piece and equal to one of the best, they have delivered so far. This is followed by "Far Pavilions" which is equal to specifying the harder sound and with an instrumental part in the middle furious merges into the chorus again. This structure of a song can be found frequently on the new album. The next song is "Isis Unveiled" and in my opinion one of the best on the album. Here skilfully combines raw power with a beautiful melody, the result is stunning. In this piece and elsewhere on "Century of Self" set a Trail of Dead, new instruments, which are perfectly integrated into the songs. The next song "Bells of Creation", "Fields of Coal", "Inland Sea" and "Pictures Of An Only Child" convince. At the end come two of the best songs that Trail of Dead ever written: "Insatiable One" and "Two Insatiable", two beautiful piano ballads. The remaining undisclosed songs are not really bad, just not quite as good as the others. The songs on "Century of Self" are all continuously coordinated at a high level, very varied and each other, which is why you should listen to the album as a whole, but that is indeed every Trail of Dead plate ahead, as the band an album always as a Gesamtkunstwerk looks, in part due to the instrumental parts.
But these are only the first impressions. All Trail of Dead albums are better after repeated listening, and so it will be also with "Century of Self". The lyrics are as always at a high level, sometimes romantic, poetic and almost always noisy Keely also very personal.
In conclusion remains to say that Trail of Dead have with the new album again found its old strength, though not quite get hold of the perfect "Worlds Apart", but have again rausgehauen incredibly good songs that otherwise hinbekommt no other band. "Century of Self" is growing and growing. Please buy and listen to again and again!
