The author's style is borrowed to the limit of an outmoded preciousness (even in 1923 ...) regarding the choice of vocabulary and a large number of sentences structure.
The narrator is 15, but he thinks and expresses his thoughts in the manner of an old "starched" from a previous century.
A young old already, in the pejorative sense of the term, well before the time ...

And what about the systematic use of imperfect subjunctive or more-than-perfect.

One often has the feeling of being in a dusty museum, one of those museums where time seems to stand still and where dust accumulates.

What a gulf between the boldness of the theme of the book and put into words!
