Customer Review

Output of compilations that cover the music of the eighties, is still enormous. Unfortunately, 99% felt these releases are compiled on the fly, it's always the same title, which will be selected. For the record companies, it is apparently still lucrative to bring this sampler to the people. For collectors and enthusiasts, however, is hardly something new here. Particularly annoying but is the loss of quality, which is noted in recent years. It is increasingly used vinyl originals. For all the love for nostalgia. So much authenticity really does not have to now.

That there is an alternative, prove since about five years Piet Blank, Jaspa Jones and Andreas Kaufhold with its series so80s (SoEighties). The proffered here musical cross-section of the eighties is not limited to the greatest hits of our favorite decade, but has also repeatedly the odd tip on board. Long ago, the series has established itself as a brand that is increasingly recognized by the major players in the scene. What so80s (SoEighties) differs from other samplers, is more than just the expertise of curators. There are features like will and passion, patience and persistence and of course the love of music from that era. In addition, a receptiveness that is unparalleled. The trio knows exactly what the fans want. Just Piet Blank is to the extent time permits, like in the social networks on the go and probed the situation. He is not only silent followers, but quite communicative. It gives answers to questions, reports on the current state of affairs, tells what works and what does not, and precisely in this way creates a transparency, the school should make.

Before a title makes it to a shekel from the house Soundcolours, but a number of hurdles and pitfalls are still to be overcome, namely:

First, the determination of at least one copyright holder
then the question of whether these rights owner ever has interest in disclosure
below the search for a (recyclable!) master tape, or a source of comparable quality

These obstacles already fail many eligible songs. It is bitter and frustrating at the same time that these legal or technical limits are extremely restrictive and countless titles will therefore never released on CD. This concerns in particular alternative versions. Many 12 mixes are probably irrecoverable. For this reason there will never be a sampler, which makes all fans equally happy because our wishes and ideas are not exposed to these hurdles naturally. Especially under these circumstances, you have to pay respect to the creators for their courage and their commitment.

Now is finally before the 9th edition and rotates been diligent in my player. The Hitdichte of so80s (SoEighties) 8 not quite reach the 9 though. This does the quality of the gathered here Works could not be stopped, but only draws attention even more on the hits from the second row. And this view is really worth it. Since the Bremer collective Saâda Bonaire, that would at that time have become legendary with his bassy Bedouin radio by a hair and an Invitation example, would be sent, is accepted with pleasure. With lots of bass and Georgie Reds Help The Man comes. A damn cool number. Almost unknown is the musical past of the British comedians Ricky Gervais (The Office). He was a member of the short-lived Seona Dancing project and among other things, published the melancholy More To Lose, which is thanks to Blank & Jones rescued from oblivion.

And again going so80s (SoEighties) new ways. For the first time Dub versions an issue. These variations of the A-side are not intended as a filler, but can certainly stand on its own, as illustrate the present examples here. Besides Jimmy Cliffs Treat The Youths Right, Francois Kevorkian has the duly turned by the sound Wolf, appear to be two of Shep Pettibone Dubs, who are much too valuable to be able to eke out only as a B-side to their existence. The US-Remixer laid hands on Precious Little Diamond (Fox The Fox) and All She Wants Is (Duran Duran). Too bad that his dub version of New Order True Faith is missing here. But Touched By The Hand Of Dub's not too shabby.

On big hits in a new guise but we have to do without this time. Paul Hardcastle's megahit 19 celebrates its CD debut in the so-called. The Final Story. Then a lot of fans have been waiting for, as you could see the first reactions in the network.

Already in the seventies, John Waite celebrated first successes as a singer of the group The Babys (Is not It Time, Every Time I Think Of You). In 1984 he started solo but by only really. Missing You was ranked 1 in the US and in Europe has been a veritable hit (D13, UK9). The extended version of the legendary remixer John Luongo made only there in its entirety and in master quality to the listener.

In addition, for the first time on CD:

The Cure Pictures Of You (Extended Re-Mix)
Ellis, Beggs & Howard Big Bubbles, No Troubles (Final Mix)
Ultravox One Small Day (US Club Mix)
Glen Goldsmith Dreaming (Extended Dance Mix)

The British pop group Latin Quarter combines pop, reggae and rock with system-critical texts and was quite popular, especially in Germany. Their first single Radio Africa deals with the then political situation in Africa. This 12 version, which differs from the Longwave version, lacking both on the European 1985 CD Modern Times as well as at the 2010 Cherry Red reissued Expanded Edition.

Other highlights that are rarely found on CD:

Simply Red Money's Too Tight (To Mention) (12 version)
Debbie Harry French Kissin 'In The USA (Dance Mix)
The Cars Hello Again (Remix)
Madness Our House (Special Remix - Extended Dance Version)
etc ...

That the CDs are not this time brimming, but only run 64-73 minutes is not because that Blank & Jones the clientele want cupping. Some licensors do not want their share falls below the licenses 1/30. On 31 titles one could nevertheless still some. Anything beyond that would, however, have to contribute the makers. That's business.

Also in terms of sound quality, Blank & Jones have the fans heard, learned the series over the years but a clearly audible acoustic improvement. The Loudness War of the first issues is part of the past fortunately. Blank & Jones have made the search for improved mastering of the songs from the first four editions and also has shared in many cases. In addition, the mixing device is now much quieter but dynamic. The sound now corresponds to the most recent publications. Only the mix CDs are exempt. Here could be made for technical reasons, no new mastering. Volumes 2 and 4 are newly remastered available, the volumes 1 and 3 are to follow in the near future. Since Volume 5, the sound parameters are as they should be. A new edition is required.

This is also true for volume 9. All work was carried out again. This one is but proceed very cautiously. The recordings were not compressed to death, but come with plenty of pressure and clearly accentuated from the speakers. The balance between authenticity and modern listening habits right.

Like all previous volumes, is the 9 haptically a winner and fits perfectly next to the top eight on the shelf. The fat booklet is an invitation to browse. Of course, all cover the Maxis are printed on single pages and in color. Was that preface so far only in German, was this time thought of the buyers from the rest of the world. The highly readable additional information is now available in English.

Short Conclusion: The ninth now so80s (SoEighties) again holds numerous new and rediscoveries ready and just plain fun. Buy!
