Total War: Rome II - [PC] (computer game)

Customer Review

Update: 20:09. - Beta Patch 3 is out with a fairly long ChangeLog, among others, I can confirm that the lap times in the co-op campaign now "normal". Instead of 2 minutes or longer ending a round now takes only seconds. At the performance has 0.0 done according benchmark.

Update 08:10. - Patch 4 available. Fairly large, visual changes, actually more performance, with me ~ 10% more fps. Many changes to the AI.

Update 20.10. - Patch 5 available

Changelog I can not link unfortunately. But can be found easily on Google

~~~ ~~~ PACKAGING
Finally a game with a manual. About the extent it is not extensive, but very pleasing to the Quick Start Guide. All key bindings are explained and some basic features in the game.
Scope of supply:
- Nice cover, looks great in the DVD cabinet
- 3 DVDs (!)
- Manual and Key
~~~ ~~~ INSTALLATION

Ran smoothly within 40 minutes on the stage. After the first DVD has been inserted, I launched the installation, then went on Steam and I was asked to enter the product key. Thereafter, the data were gradually copied from the DVD on my SSD. Strangely, I had to download any comment yet about 1.3GB after installation. It seems reasonable to suppose that this is the pre-order and day-one DLC.

Due to the high memory requirement, I can only urgently to advise the game to get a DVD and not downloading. I initially toyed with the idea, but then left fortunately be. It takes 32k DSL or better, otherwise you sit here forever!

The game needs therefore on the disk 19GB, not 35. Why speak the manufacturer of 35GB I do not know. Who gets the game as a download, so still have to reckon with a (very) long download, depending on the Internet. I simply surmise times that the game with several DLCs and patches could be great at the end of 35GB. Currently is the not the case.

+ I recommend installing on the SSD, if possible. The load times are much better.

~~~ ~~~ SOUND
The sound is in my opinion succeeded. But the Total War parts had so far always a very good background music. This time you will not gelumpt. In the whole fray a 5.1 system makes clearly paid! But that is purely subjective.
~~~ ~~~ GRAPHICS

The game is well scaled. I have now installed it on my computer and my laptop. Even on my laptop (NV / Intel) the game is still running, albeit with greatly minimized settings (Preset / resolution).
Here my desktop system:

Intel Core i5-2400; NVIDIA GTX 660 2GB; 8GB DDR3 Ram; Game installed on SSD, Resolution: 2560x1080 (21: 9)

Benchmark Results:

Ultra (2nd highest setting) - an average of 26 FPS
Etrem (highest setting) - an average of 21 FPS
Beta Patch 2.0 Ultra - an average of ~ 29 FPS (see Customer Product Photo)

(CPU Update: Got my CPU changed on a Core i7 3770 today, am now at 29.9 FPs average makes it clear that a strong CPU brings in stake 0 (unfortunately).!)

I would again point out that I'm playing in a (much) higher resolution. In fullHD the frames would most likely better. The Ultra preset with the avg. 26 fps runs with me quite well in practice. Has been able to find no halt.

The game supports 21: 9 format of the house, which I granted an expanded view on the battlefield. I have, apart from anti-aliasing (antialiasing / jaggies) and AnisotropeFilterung (Focus), everything on "ultra" and the game runs smoothly. Since it is a strategy game, it does not need to run 35FPS decent.
My laptop has only a Core2Duo and a NV GS 9500, so really no glory, but even here running the game, but as mentioned, in very lowest settings, but still. There are now many reports that the performance on AMD graphics cards to be below average. It would be a driver issue.

Otherwise, the graphics are of course extremely attractive. I found the graphics of Total War-parts have always been very appealing and Rome II is the crown on. Really good details. The individual soldier are chic animated. Everything moves asynchronously, so you do not have the feeling that you would have a huge army cloned. Strength of this part are clearly the fight details in high zoom level. You can sit and watch the troops in the battle. If you still have to the aforementioned 5.1-conditioning, it is believed to sit in the cinema. Really fun.
Is matched by the "Cinema Mode". The camera is behind the clamped at the time selected, unit and you're right in the middle, rather than just only this.

~ Recommendation ~
Even if the game really well scaled, ie can also be implemented on less powerful computer, you should for the highest details, have a potent card from the 6 or 7 series from Nvidia. At AMD, I can not be no cross-reference, because I do not know my way around there as well. The last bit of fun there is in any case only with maximum details!

~~~ ~~~ GAMEPLAY
My impressions so far as follows:
- User-friendly Tutor-(prologue campaign), which is not too difficult to get started also designed for newcomers to the series
- Huge selection of new and cool units
- The (combined) Sea battles are really cool! It's totally fun to bring the units by ship to the coast, while the besieged city is also taken by my siege troops through the wringer. That makes just have a lot of fun. Unsubscribe The slaughter itself is an absolute must. Cinematic staging!
- For pre-order, there is a state DLC for free, making it possible to control some Greek city-states. I'm just saying: madness? Hmmm ... This is SPARTA !!! "
- The new strategy map is very nicely animated. One can now see much better on the strategy map, the cities and their expansion stage.
- There are both on the battlefield and on the strategy map a whole lot new features that are in the details. I will not spoil anything here.
~ ~ UDAPTE
- As has already been asked, I want to again commend the (new) weather system. Already known from its predecessors, it has been further perfected. The weather is now dynamic and changeable. Both Vegitation and time of day (day / night), as well as topography and weather play an important role and can be used strategically. It's quite a fun to put his opponent an ambush at night. The units can be positioned around the enemy manipulates in an ambush namely, from both sides!
- If it's raining, then you can not use fire arrows, buildings are more difficult to set on fire. On wet ground (mud / sludge) exhaust units faster, etc, etc. Really a lot of new things which, although in the details, but make the battle more interesting.
- The pre-order bonus (Preorder), in the form of the first DLC, there is the way by mail.
I got my mail on Sunday (1:09.). The key is simply registered on Steam (Game Add) and already you're gonna get the DLC registered under ROME2
- The incident with the provinces, I personally find pretty cool. For example, the population is growing now generally in the province and no longer individually each city. Which city grows by the "surplus population", has himself in hand.
- The co-op campaign is a nice change. It can be set both a lap as well as a slaughter timeout. One can fight together, then you share the control of the army, or against each other, then you play each battle ever against a vein and the opponent takes over the enemy army.
I hope I would like to the game you made, it's really worth. The 50 were previously well spent. Best Rome of all time, the best Total War ever!
~~~ ~~~ KOOP

I've never played at TW Koop. Shugon has gone completely past me.
Therefore, sometimes quite objectively: ... The Koop is cool! -D
I've gotten a couple of hours Koop behind me. Following first time a small description:
The co-op campaign is a maximum of 2 players. Everyone can choose his own side. One can together (Koop) or play against einaner (hand-to-man). Furthermore, one can determine the lap length and the slaughter timeout. Each player can set the difficulty for themselves. Whether this applies only to slaughter or for the campaign I can not say. In any case, the battle difficulty is different, if you set the Regeler different. Is deciding who will start the battle, its difficulty level decides. The game begins: 1. The player must draw and has the time previously defined for (lap length). During this time he can operate the game normally: army, expand towns attack. The second player has so long pause and can look at the map, plan your next steps, but not yet running. Accesses player1 in "his" lap, there are 3 ways:
1) He reaches manually and Player2 looks at
2) He attacks manually and Player2 befehlt part of player1's army. But can player1 during ongoing combat control of as many or few units cede. The control can not be recovered, but returned each time.
3) He attacks and Player2 has its own army within reach, that can then engage in the battle and controlled by Player2, Player1 while controlling its own army. So then battles may occur with several armies and 3 or more different fractions covers. Such battles are tactically especially appealing because you with two independent armies can take the pliers the opponent.

After player1 has completed the round, is Player2's turn and in turn can make anything he thinks is right. Just as in single player. After also player2 ends the round, the other groups for their turn. After the round 'really' finished and Player1 is turn again.

If you play the campaign against each other, can not of course be for two controlled an army. This option is omitted and instead, in every battle, whether PvP or Player vs AI, are against each other. The opponent then takes over in the battle in control of the AI army.

Mir has brought a lot of fun the co-op mode. I've taken with my buddy together several cities and held various battles manually.
We had previously (4h season) not a single bug! If one assumes that the long round-ends is not a bug - this under Contra more.

~~~ ~~~ CONTRA
But now we want to come to Contra:
- The game works partly unfinished. It is increasingly reported from bugs that are critical, more or less, but game play and fun significantly turbid.
~ According to developers of the least affected. I do not count fortunately this, so I can only tell them what is in the forums. ~
- Partially not be objects of the envisaged place
- Units move through objects or ships coming into the country
- The predecessor there were great little videos that have certain events announced. This feature lacks obvious (yet?) Completely
- Incorrect speech. Texts are inappropriate, too little voice actors. Too often, the same messages.
- Ending a round of Koop takes unpleasantly long. Even groups that were not even cleared up on the Campaign Map / discovered, get their 1-2 seconds when you exit the turn. With more than 100 groups, which can be annoying animal when each round end something takes between 1-2 minutes. I hope that is gefixxt quickly. [Update] The error was now we have not addressed. Mostly it takes now even longer, because every train the AI appears, regardless of whether you have the set in advance so or not. The trains are not dealt with in the time lapse ...
+++ There are now the second patch in beta, has a lot of my criticisms in the change log. If necessary, are some points then dispelled.
Who but absolutely allergic to bugs, should keep their distance if necessary still.
Finally, I would say that the new Rome is really a good game, yet still has huge potential that has been wasted. A few larger patches might be remedied. I want to hope that the developers do not rest on past laurels and spend the time trying to count the money from the pre-orders and nachzuschieben only new paid-DLCs.
Until the perfect game, it is still a long way. But Rome2 definitely has the potential.
As long as the existing problems are not addressed, I draw each 1 Star or More in gameplay and overall impression.
