Garmin zumo 340LM motorcycle navigation system (10.9 cm (4.3 inches) touch screen, SD card slot, USB) with Central Europe maps (Electronics)

Customer Review

I have 340 bought the Zumo to replace my old Quest II. I was so far not exactly spoiled when it comes to screen size and usability with gloves. Based on the Zumo a giant step towards the future.

Inside the box you will find not only the actual device, some quickstart guides in different languages, an installation manual for the motorcycle and a mountain accessories, all neatly wrapped nicely in individual plastic bags.

Of course I wanted to recharge the device's battery, first of all. Here, I then also noticed that the delivery part no charger for normal power supply. So I used the included mini-USB to USB cable with a standard USB power adapter. Has also worked just fine, but I do not know how long the shop took (it was run overnight).

The assembly on the bike is going well out of hand, because the package includes everything you need for this. The included RAM mount made fasten to my FJR-1300 easily on the clutch lever. The specified in the manual torque 50-80 lbf-in I have in 5-10 Nm converted. On the RAM mount a plastic plate is screwed into the Zumo then snaps. It sits fairly stable, not hindered, and is from the normal driving position easy to read. Unfortunately, there seems to be no lockable holder, said theft protection by such holder would also be questionable. So you take it just always with what also is therefore the same sense, because the unit stores the position at which it is taken out of the holder. So you can at any time be traced back to the parking lot, if you get lost sometimes.

The power supply is made by means of the cable is also provided that in addition to the voltage converter includes a fuse 2A. Theoretically, a direct connection to the battery would be possible, I have it yet to the fuse box (hazard lights fuse) clamped so that it starts when I turn off the ignition.

The device has exactly one real button, at the top. This is used to turn on and off and reset if it has been suspended once.

When the device then drops to first that it long (very long) takes until finally something else than the Garmin logo appears in the display. But after that the service is running pretty smoothly. Short press the switch to put the unit in a standby mode, in which it is to hold several weeks, according to Garmin. A short press on the same switch wakes it almost seamlessly back on, so the long wait is possible only if the unit was actually off.

The shutdown is achieved by pressing the button until the display shows the relevant question appears (about 5 seconds). One should remember for Use wintering well.

If the device to "hang" and become unresponsive, you can still by a long press (about 10 seconds) to perform a kind of reset. It then simply reboots.

The "LM" in the device name stands for "Lifetime Maps" and means that we obtain about 4 free map updates per year for this device. This applies to the entire life of the unit and is of course a practical matter. To view our map update you have apparently not even register the device, but simply connect via USB cable to your PC and call the corresponding website. My first update, I have of course made immediately has taken a good hour. Unfortunately, the corresponding browser plug-in only works on Windows or Mac OS, as Linux users I therefore first had a virtual machine with Windows start, before I could perform the upgrade.

Then I played a couple of routes and waypoints on the Zumo per QLandkarte GT, which goes by the way without any problems. Apart from the map updates so you can do without Windows. The OSM Germany map can be brought via microSD card easily on the device and will be recognized immediately.

Both for the map updates, as well as for data transfer is allowed for probably not use any USB cable, but must use the supplied. With a normal micro-USB to USB cable, the device is loaded but the PC does not even notice that it was connected.

Then I felt well equipped to time to take a closer look me the device itself. Unfortunately, it was constantly "GPS is off" in the display and registered obviously not that it was moving. Any settings that I have made (eg volume to the minimum) were forgotten after a few minutes. The hook, with which one (ie the operation without GPS for indoor use) turns on the simulation mode was set and could not take off. Multiple reset did not lead to a change here. Ultimately told me then friend Google helped: I have the instructions found in the switching on and off of the demo mode is described. Apparently, it is so that my unit was delivered in a demo mode (perhaps this applies to all, that I can not judge), so for example, a dealer can show the Zumo, even if it at the store has no reception. For probably the same reason, it also forgets every few minutes all settings, so that the presentation always starts in the same state. Now that I've turned off the demo mode, it keeps my settings and also know actually where it is located. The instructions (although is for Nüvi, but also works for Zumo) is personalize it here: garminservice.de/common/pdf/tipps/nuevi-3790T-Demomodus.pdf

In the instructions the way also is that the demo mode is automatically terminated if the unit detects a movement at a speed of more than 15 km / h. I did not of course done on foot, by motorbike it would have been no problem. This will be indicated in the instructions would have been nice.

I give the device four stars because it makes a good impression overall. The withdrawal of a star, there is the lack of reference to the demo mode and the lack of Linux support. Although both are really no problem of the device itself, but diminish the good first impression.

Here again in a nutshell, what struck me positively or negatively:

Positive
- Include all mounting hardware including power for the vehicle.
- Large, bright, easy to read display
Recognized 8GB MicroSD card with OpenStreetMap card easily -
- Usable with QLandkarte GT on Linux
- Pleasantly big, with gloves comfortable-to-use, touch-screen buttons
- Rapid route calculation
- Free map updates

Negative
- Map updates not possible under Linux
- Lack of reference to demo mode
- Missing mains charger

Next weekend I'm going to drive my first major tour with the device might then result new insights. Then I carry it here of course to.
