Battery: seeeeeehr loooong term. This is not a UMTS phone, which has a positive effect on the battery performance. Even with intensive use (calls, listening to music, ebook reader) I have only on the 3rd day to the charging plug. Big plus!
Call quality: clear sound when making calls, high telephone volume adjustable. This one is still capable, even in a very noisy environment, to have a conversation.
Display: Acceptable resolution, colors are strong for a TFT display and have good contrast. Images are reproduced well and the resolution is to Ebooklesen just adequate. Important: the display can be adjusted very bright, so it day and remains readable. Reflections are middle acceptable range. It smudged easily.
Touchscreen: Reacts good even at low pressure, which is very pleasant at typing on the QWERTY keyboard. Must scroll to first practice since - as already mentioned by others - you need a bit of tact it. If you get the hang of it (slowly drag your finger and at the end of the movement without pressure finger from the touch screen to move away, otherwise you open the same the selected object), it is quite good. But when not eager learners an absolute return basis, since the operation becomes tormenting. In any case, the touch screen is more sensitive and more accurate than eg. the LG KU990i Viewty Light.
-> Note the scroll function: There is an alternative means of volume controls, which are mounted laterally on the device to scroll (for not being motivated to learn). I find not necessarily an intuitive solution, but it is nonetheless a solution. :)
Sound via built-in speaker: music is not so powerfully rendered, such as the Sony Ericsson W580i, its miniature loudspeaker had an unexpected "full" sound. When Star, although it is quite noisy, but missing the deeper regions almost entirely. Who will necessarily sound for the Star his fellow man, gets average quality.
Sound via supplied headset: just flat and dull. No comparison to the ear headset from Sony Ericsson W580i. Hear no bass and a bit cheap.
Sound via Samsung Ear headset (not included): this headset has a 3.5 mm coupling, where you can connect individual headphones. Although it counts as an ear model from Samsung does not affect the sound as good as the aforementioned Sony Ericsson headphones. Even readjust the equalizer of the Star does not bring the desired result.
Camera: provides very good results in daylight. Beautiful colors with good contrast. The many adjustment (Smile Shot: triggers only when detektiertem smile from, Panorama function, etc) you will not find anywhere in this affordable entry-level class. Although "only" 3 MP but for good photos. In the evening, the images to use as with all devices with no flash, no or hardly.
Software: the widgets that you can drag to the desktop, are nice, but not necessarily all the rage. Phone profiles switch, weather reports, a photo contact widget, a birthday reminder widget (very good) are the few meaningful examples. Those that are on the web for download, are often just updates the existing ones.
Apart from the concerns Widgets "software" and the user interface itself. Unfortunately, that reacts quite slow (especially if more data / pictures / music stored). For example, I took over from my old phone in the gallery about 500 images (depending 2MP resolution). The scrolling function (a la iPhone) takes a long time responding to them. If only a few images in memory, it is not a problem. The same applies to a very nice feature: there is a kind caller list that displays the last selected contacts in the form of images in the form of a semicircle. The longer the list is, the more jerky scrolling. Too bad, because it would be really a very nice feature. It seems that the processor or the like of the bottle neck in the processing of entries appears to be. For example, the really good software QWERTY keyboard: The entries with the thumb going smoothly and accurately. After a little practice you can hardly make a mistake. But woe if the dictionary is on this (makes suggestions based on previous entries). This causes delays when typing and actually meaningful dictionary function becomes an obstacle when writing.
Java programs: can be with certain firmware versions do not just install on the memory card. There is a workaround, but you have to download for a small FTP client on the Internet by means of which you can install the Java programs or to invite a different firmware version on the phone, which may lead to loss of warranty. Instructions for both methods please search at Google (it exists in hundreds). This can be the star before use as EBOOKREADER (eg. With Mobipocket Reader). The pre-installed PDF reader does not bring it because it does not calculate new zooming paragraphs -> horizontal scrolling annoying when reading.
Browser: Internet surfing, it is of limited use, since it does not offer UMTS connection. The GPRS connection is sufficient but for sites slimmed for mobile devices, completely out. The installed browser is fast and the zoom function (up or down a scroll with one finger, as in the picture gallery) works well. Of course, no Flash support in the browser available. But without UMTS would need this content anyway too long to load.
Processing: very good. Although everything is made of plastic, but the workmanship is clean and precise. Nothing crunches and the gaps are minimal. The overall impression is of high quality and the design is compact and elegant. The appearance fits easily. The battery cover is on good, sure you need for the first few times perhaps a little more force. But again, you get the hang of times, you have to be a muscle man to open the cover with a slight jolt in the direction indicated by the triangle.
Spechererweiterung: microSD cards are officially recognized to 8GB. According to other sources are even 16GB function. Unfortunately one comes close only to the memory card, if you removed the battery. To ensure that no change is possible during operation. Too bad too bad.
Synchronization (appointments and address book): the Sync software from Samsung is visually beautiful, but has its quirks! If the device is connected via USB, the Star is detected times or times not (each 3 times). That goes better with other manufacturers. When you synchronize with Outlook, it may be that an appointments be cut from 30 characters. Should they not behaved the dates have named succinctly, that can be messy when they can no longer distinguish between the dates. This was extremely unpleasant. The descriptions of the appointment contents may be longer and go seemingly not lost, but that I had to find out after the event.
The Samsung Star is good, if it is not overused. Sacrificing sound quality, with the reaction time (if it is filled in the memory) and in the synchronization have caused me the resell otherwise good phone again.
