Matthew E. White is basically the continuation of what he started on Big Inner: opulent arrangements, sophisticated compositions using strings, brass and background choir, all in a quiet groove, which increases from time to time, intelligent lyrics, where also again Jesus shows up (haha, sorry, the pun had to be). But it comes to sexual abuse in the American church, suicide and financial ruin. Still, you can call the whole modern white soul, if you will. The difference to the debut is that the songs and the production now sound like wide screen cinema, are demanding more and you probably still take a while until everything opens up. Maybe not as homogeneous as the firstfruits. Beautiful successor plate anyway. Who liked the debut, is also Freshblood like, who did not like the debut, is not happy with Fresh Blood. (And that's not so automatically).
