Since our last game Scotland Yard has come "lost", I've been looking for a replacement. When searching, I found gratifying that there are quite advancements of the game was (New York version, etc. - looks at Wikipedia). And it is this variant that has been upgraded with an app. Since the Price btw. Standard and Master variant Amazon was about 2, I naturally slammed.
Anticipation, the master version can also play without app, which is very exciting and easily times takes an hour.
Now we had of course tried the app with the family and tested the promise of additional functions. This was done on 4 different Android devices (Samsung Galaxy S1 to Noname tablet). All devices running with Android 4 and anywhere you could download the app for free from the store. But crucial for the functioning of the built-in camera.
Only one tablet had a sufficiently good camera and allowed to play at all stress-free during normal evening room lighting. It should, incidentally, also a device with a large screen - be - ie tablet. On a smartphone display is - due to the physics - not very comfortable.
The app complements the game with confidence and creates additional stress, because the persecutors and Mister X received some balanced bonuses. But the idea is only as good as the digital conversion. The main problem is the necessary camera function in the app. No autofocus! It is permanently engaged to move the camera up or down to a sharp image of the board game box to erzeugen.Es is no "touch-focus function". In low light, nothing works. A flashlight was needed ... a minute long fumbling ... yes you would prefer to plunk down everything! The detection of the pitch was terrible.
A counter test with the camera app of Android device itself shows that a prima picture would be possible with conventional light ratios. Conclusion: the camera function as an integral part of the app is implemented atrocious. This goes so far that, the picture was even shown in reverse on a test tablet.
In short - thus the 3-D mode is to "pull" the MisterX - figure on the tablet absolutely useless and reveals immediately apparent position. Fortunately, there are still half the analog 2-D mode. But why is not delivered to a virtual decision-making tool in the form of board game view on the tablet in the presentation of the next turn of Mr. X?
Practically over analog variant is, of course, that as Mr. X per tablet - can move while writing his next turn his character - without much covering the panel.
I can only hope that Ravensburger here total nachbessert and wants to decorate not only with the app function. In the current version to play analog only and therefore no classic app with us all the players. That's a shame because the potential has the whole story.
I seriously wonder whether the master variant was truly time tested under real conditions, and why the app is great at the present functions over 60MB. In the current development Stadium (01/2015) do I rate only satisfactory. And that happens only because the game itself is remarkable, despite age.
