Customer Review

For "One Day at a Time," their album from 1970, Joan Baez went back to Nashville. With the first set of the local musicians they recorded an album whose songs could not be different, but which one could confidently give the predicate "excellent".
First, there are times some purebred Country Songs like the sentimental Traditional "Take Me Back to the Sweet Sunny South", the traditional dance piece "Jolie Blonde" in which Baez uses her voice as an instrument, and the already known "Long Black Veil" this time with band accompaniment. From Nashville Outlaw Willie Nelson the soulful "I Lived One Day at a Time" comes. From singer / songwriter Steve Young, she took "Seven Bridges Road", whose bluesy bluntness replaced them with melodic beauty. Even "No Expectations" by the Rolling Stones, they gave a fine-sounding note. The sheer power of her voice unfolds with Delaney & Bonnie's "Ghetto" and the Gospel "Carry It On", close sets here than staying slogan for the street protest. Add to this the history of the trade union leader "Joe Hill" (-ström) a political song.
Two songs contributed Baez in itself. Their ode to her knight "Sweet Sir Galahad", one of their best pieces of composition and the personal, shaped by longing waiting for her husband sitting in prison "A Song for David", another masterpiece.
With three songs ("Take Me Back to the Sweet Sunny South", "Seven Bridges Road" and "I Lived One Day at a Time"), she sang with Jeffrey Shirtleff who had also accompanied vocally at the Woodstock Festival, in a duet, which is quite appealing.
Musically, Baez was here in its "Country-phase". Accordingly, the arrangements were made. But everything is much more relaxed and airy than the previous "David's Album".
The two bonus tracks were written by country star Merle Haggard and in 1969 recorded along with Jeffrey Shirtleff. Stylistically there are country songs, albeit with socially critical content.
The remastering is fine. Unfortunately the beautiful interior photo of the original folding album, with shortened hair shows the pregnant Joan Baez on a hillside of Struggle Mountains, not included in the booklet. A real shame.
