Judging by what is written in the booklet, one can say it is actually able to dress Purcell's music in a contemporary garb. The music is pretty cool, therefore, partly jazzy, bluesy and orchestration with piano, guitar and clarinet and the waiver of the otherwise usual at L'Arpeggiata and zinc-present (as much as I love it), the CD is good and also gives the sound of L'Arpeggiata a new and worth listening touch. Convince especially the more lively pieces myself fully. In the slower pieces my opinion is divided. It often is very well-known pieces Purcell's that do not really give by a sparingly plucked, jazzy bass, for example, the whole thing a new or better painting. What brings me then also the quality of the singers: Philippe Jaroussky, who in my eyes, or should I say ears, has become even better sing a bell, soulful and just beautiful. Whether the English plays his "thing" really are, is likely to be a matter of taste. Even the almost mischievous sung piece of Dominque Visse I liked and amused in his slanted interpretation.
Miscast in my eyes but is Raquel Andueza, whose voice I just is too thin and unconvincing. Then also to let you sing songs that have been interpreted by a Jessye Norman and similar powerful voices, is a new, but unfortunately not a good way. An interpretation by a soprano can succeed if it has volume and conviction in her voice. Both I miss here and a musically-oriented framework latter day does not do this up for me.
Therefore, not full marks but nevertheless a full purchase recommendation!
