One thing first: Of course I have tested the outer focus areas (especially the left) because of the many negative reviews. I have used for the 24-70 mm at f 2.8 at all zoom levels. I could not tell the difference visually between the left and the Autokusmessfeld Live View autofocus. Thus, my camera seems to be not affected by the issue. The serial number is 6059XXX.
Now for my experience.
Landscapes:
What first stands out is the enormous dynamic range. Even very high subject contrast are reproduced excellently. The images received Drawing in the dark and light areas, as I have not seen it. The color rendering I find very lifelike, even when automatic white balance, the results are very good.
Portrait:
At an outdoor shoot with approximately 300 shots NO image was lack focus, what I think of the autofocus module addresses. To use this, the Nikkor 70-200 2.8 VR II came and the Nikkor VR Micro 105 2.8. When 70-200er I have worked with shutter speeds of 1/200 sec at least. To avoid camera shake. In order not to fall below this shutter speed, I pulled up in the evenings the ISO up to 2000, which is in my opinion no problem. Then on the PC I have times (at 300 dpi 36.31 cm) downscaled images on the screen size of the D300S what the noise again reduced so that I have not seen it.
Striking improved over older models is the Live View. When shooting from a frog's perspective that was very helpful, the autofocus in Live View is fast and accurate.
Sports:
I have taken a BMX downhill descent in the late afternoon at ISO 2000 and area AF 3D-tracking. I was standing right next to the race track, so that the BMX riders feeds almost on me. Autofocus could easily keep up with the pace of BMX riders. To enhance the continuous shooting speed leisurely something I have photographed in the DX mode and JPEG. OK, continuous shooting, the D300S better for the shooting with the D800 at ISO 2000 virtually noise-free and exhilarating dynamic performance. A few shots I have specially exposed a little tighter on the sky. During the subsequent processing I could easily brighten the BMX riders by one stop, which speaks for the outstanding dynamic range of the camera.
Conclusion:
Strong buy recommendation, and you should consider buying a new computer with due to the file sizes.
