Book I have read in college, or high school I remember, and I wanted to rediscover with a different eye. I still love the basis of history, I find the idea good.
The book is more than a novel or it happens a lot of things, and a kind of psychological journey, an inner journey. Carrère narrates following thought the former mustachioed (or not?).
This poor man goes through a sequence of all feelings and resentments logic, resulting each time a new approach to his problem. It's pretty well written. We go from the joke misunderstanding and anger. Doubt, aigritude, certainty, doubt again, paranoia, rejection of others etc ... (the order is not good of course).
So it is a descent into hell we offer psychological author, and I found it good enough, the beginning being only the beginnings of what will happen to him ... It is fluid, the ideas keep coming, and when we find a solution to his problem he begs almost as early. Is he crazy? we played him a dirty trick? Is his wife who is calibrated? Did he never had a mustache?
So we swallow the pages like the guy flakes ideas and one wonders what is the truth and how it will get out of this mess.
Towards the last 50 pages it starts to drag a bit long, secretly asked it shortens and we finally ponde the outcome that will change us forever. Until the last line is expected revelation ...
I can not say more about the end not to spoil the surprise. For staff that messed me pleasure, but I do not doubt that some people like. Let's say for short that prevent me from sleeping for 1H rehashing the same issues.
I still had a pretty good time. If possible to read in one go, to not lose the thread of his thought.
