The New Danger (Audio CD)

Customer Review

1. Boogie man song
Opened is the second solo album from Mos Def with a jazz track. Produced by Mos Def and Raphael Saadiq, play the two and the instruments involved. Raphael takes guitar and bass, the piano and the drums Mos. These sings Mos instead of rapping.
2. Freaky Black Greetings
It continues with the self-conception of the band Black Jack Johnson. This 2:20 minute semi-instrumental track, is just the intro the band.
3. Ghetto rock
This track was "Love & Money Sex" selected as the B-side of the first single release. There for the first time real rap. Minnesota provides the very dull beat. Mos Def's voice is also steamed and fits to the beat.
"Yes we are ghetto, yes we are rock and roll" is the message. The one does not exclude the other just out ...
4. Zimzallabim
Together with producer Easy Mo Bee deliver Blackjack Johnson for the first time the music to a track. The band is limited to the chorus, and in the verses there is a normal rap beat, which is only intermittently interrupted by short guitar reefs.
5. The rape over
Here the gentle rap fan will soon notice that this beat is not necessarily new. Instead of an old soul sample used producer Kanye West here a beat, which he himself has ever used. Namely "The Takeover" by Jay-Z. Not by chance is dementpsrechend including the title of the track: "The rape over".
Was "The Takeover" still a Diss against other rappers Mos Def himself busy on the very short track (1:34 minutes) longer with the rap industry in general. "Old White Men is running this rap shit, Corporate Force is running this rap shit (...), MTV is running this rap shit".
The track has now been taken off the album in the US because of excessive criticism.
6. Blue Black Jack (w / Shuggie Otis)
Named Shuggie Otis probably most rap fans will not be able to do much. In the 70s he was, however, one of the most important Soul / Funk / R & B artists. The guitarist was already delivered an innovative sound. The Mos Def his music knew then appreciate, now shows this feature. Shuggie plays the rhythm guitar and the guitar solo in this blues. Minnesota provides the rest of music, based on the standard blues rhythm.
7. Bedstuy Parade & Funeral March (w / Paul Osher)
After Shuggie Otis is available immediately the next Star glory. 1968 to the 70 in Paul Osher was the first white blues musician who was allowed to play in the band of the legendary Muddy Waters. In this mixture of Blues and a march Mos Def sings his verse.
8. Sex, Love & Money
The first single of the album is again a classic rap piece. Mos Def raps on a beat of Baby Dubb Warryn Campbell. Mos can sometimes flashed his skills on the mic again really here. The Beat convinced absolutely. The bass is supplied in addition to the normal drums primarily of a timpani, plus there are short bursts of brass and especially a flute to accompany the verses. A very good rap track.
9. Sunshine
Kanye West production number 2 comes so therefore, as you have often heard in recent times by Kanye. The beat is built around a sample from a soul piece that everyone knows. In this case, "Let the sunshine in" by The Fifth Dimension, and Diana Ross and the Supremes. The chorus has been left just as it is in the original. In between Mos Def flowed excellently over the very melodic beat.
10. Close Edge
This track is the only album that I do not like really. Minnesota provides a beat, on the one hand electronically, on the other hand continuously accompanied by bongo game. This beat is also, which makes this song sound somehow raw and empty. The chorus is "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five sampled.
11. The panties
Now we come slowly in the soul of the album.
Here comes the musical setting of Minnesota. The beat starts very calmly, and, when the drums sets in, a little faster.
Mos Def sings a love song. A very nice piece of soul that once again shows the Mos rap not only very good, but also can sing well.
However, the song for the total length of 4:11 minutes is a bit too monotonous.
12. War
"War" begins with a relatively hard beat, and about the middle of the piece, after a brief interlude, then get Black Jack Johnson again, and still provide a bit more hardness.
Produced is the beat of Psycho Les of the Beatnuts.
13. Grown Man Business (Fresh vintage bottles) (w / Minnesota)
This track Minnesto now operates not only as a producer but also sometimes as a rapper. The Beat contains a sample of "Simon Says" by Pharoahe Monch.
14. Modern Marvel
The most interesting track on the album might be "Modern Marvel". This tribute to Marvin Gaye track begins with a very slow and distorted sample of "What's going on". Mos Def sings about a beautiful soul song. After 2:30 minutes the track is initially hidden, but then reappears and the drums will start. The resulting slightly faster beat adheres to about 5:50 minutes. At this point, this beat is hidden, and then again so appears that a rap beat, based on "What's going on" is created. From here Mos Def raps then about Marvin.
Produced is this track from Minnesota.
15. Life is real
With a typical rap song, it continues. The beat comes from Molecules. If you want to discuss about the "realness" of Mos Def and his music can listen to this track. "What I spit and I write is real, Because my life is real."
16. The easy spell
This crossover track is written and produced by Mos Def, who is also all instruments spielt.Der most of the text rapped it.
17. The Beggar
The last track with participation of Black Jack Johnson is one of the finest soul tracks that the album has to offer. The beat is held the first three or four minutes very simple. Only percussion and organ playing. Then begins the guitar, but holds back a lot. The very romantic song, is the second love song of the album. Also worth mentioning is the beautiful guitar solo at about 2:30 minutes.
18 requiem Champion
After the spoken outro of Mos Def follows the last track of this album. 88 Keys is seated at the controls.
There is even a little hardener rap piece at the end. Parts of the track are some tributes to deceased musicians like Aaliyah, Left Eye, Jam Master Jay, BIG, 2Pac, Freaky Tah, Big L ... "Everything Must come to an end".
Total:
Remember back: 1998 published Rawkus Records, the most important underground rap label of the late 90s and the first years of the new millennium, the album "Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Black Star". This album produced two of the most respected rappers probably the next time to the public. The Black Star album was quickly made a milestone in rap history, and Mos Def and Talib Kweli started their solo careers. So Mos 1999 "Black on Both Sides" brought to the market, his first solo album, he was hailed as the great savior of the true hip-hop, and every rap fan, who was convinced of his expertise, called thenceforth Mos Def as one of his three favorite artist.
Exactly five years (The US release was accurate at the date five years after the release of "Black on Both Sides") to this album Mos Def gives finally his second solo album. And for this album, "The New Danger" he is now criticized by the very people who saw the true savior of hip-hop movement in it.
Since it already was since 2002 rumors about that Mos Def possibly plans to launch a pure rock album on the market, the first criticism was quickly found: The album is too much rock, and far too little rap. This criticism, however, is based only on the mentioned rumors and on an opinion that someone has made after listening to the first four tracks. Because from then there are hardly any rock.
Then there's the group that calls itself "Reliable rap fans", and always speak of "realness" as a counterpart to "Sellout, mainstream, commerce and backpacker music". These "fans" complain that the album that it is not real hip-hop, and Mos Def would betray his "real" fans. But these people have simply again nothing verstanden.Ihre opinion is based primarily on bigotry and ignorance. In short: The album is for these people too demanding.
The album has a lot to offer. There are Jazz (track # 1), Soul (# 11, # 14, # 17), Rock (# 2, # 4, # 12), Crossover (# 16) and even Blues (# 6, # 7). But most of all it offers Rap! (# 3, # 5, # 8, # 9, # 10, # 12, # 13, # 15, # 18)
To say that the album would not be a rap album, so is wrong. But Mos Def shows here that he is not a one-dimensional musician. He can sing, he can sooner frequently flash. He can point to some Soul tracks really. He can do all the musical implement what he loves, and what has shaped him. With guests like Shuggie Otis and Paul Osher he has 70 built two famous Blues / Soul / Funk musicians in two of his songs. As admirers of Marvin Gaye, the the late soul singer delivers the same excellent almost 10 minute tribute song.
And as a fan of rock music, he has taken with the band Black Jack Johnson a damn good support on board. The band is named after Jack Johnson, the first black boxer who could win the world title in the heavyweight division. That was in 1908. The band is busy with Will Calhoun on drums, he was a member of the successful band "Living Color" and worked as a studio musician, among others with BB King, Mick Jagger, Run-DMC and Public Enemy. Doug Wimbish plays the bass. He began his career as a studio bassist of the legendary Sugar Hill Records label. Later, he was also a member of "Living Color" and played in the studio with musicians such as Madonna, Mick Jagger, the Rolling Stones or Seal. On guitar is Gary Miller. He was a member of the Jamaican punk band Bad Brains. Bernie Worrell on keyboards was a musician, producer and songwriter of the band "Parliament- Funkadelic" who brought it to more than 50 albums. His music has been used for samples in track from Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Salt-N-Pepa, Snoop Dogg, En Vogue, Digital Underground, Heavy D, De La Soul and others. Meanwhile, he is even in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame has been!
The band is thus quite Congenial to Mos Def.
That, however, does not apply the album the tastes of every rap fans, is of course quite natural. Whoever expects a pure rap album, will initially be a bit disappointed. However, if in addition to a little rap has left for other types of music, will find pleasure in this album. To say that Mos Def has fallen, however, is wrong. But he has changed definitely. And it will certainly give some rap fans whose taste no longer meets this album. For others dageben, this album is probably one of the most innovative and diverse hip hop albums of all time.
