A Machiavellian abbess

The Abbess of Crewe (Paperback)

Customer Review

Muriel Spark offers us a very funny book with 'The Abbess of Crewe' in which we witness the rivalry between two nuns - Alexandra, imperious, creamy and Machiavellian, and Felicity, fickle and sassy - to become the abbess of the convent ; rivalry that leads to a scandal. The story is not realistic, but it embarks without problems through writing. Some commentators interpret the book as a reflection on Watergate and power in general, yes, but we take much pleasure in reading the book in the first degree without going beyond a simple reading pleasure.
