Maybe it was the timing: 1993 was the word "cyberpunk" as I remember vividly, temporarily pretty Swallowed ... the first cyberpunk wave in the SF was already abgeebt, many bands had submitted albums by the subject (including Cassandra Complex, Frontline Assembly, and of course, Sigue Sigue Sputnik) and there was a whole bunch of games appropriate (such as Cyberpunk 2013. Shadowrun, cyberspace).
In short: "Cyberpunk" sounded in 1993 as a slogan and music concept no longer as cool as it would be in 1990 have been the case, for example, and it just all seemed a little labored, as Billy Idol announced an album called cyberpunk, and song title as "Neuromancer" and "heroin" did not diminish this impression. Visionary had the concept of the album in 1993 on me, but actually quite predictable.
Musically sound the album then also a little effort - a Chugging drum machine, a few Technoeinsprengsel and a few samples appeared in 1993 not unheard of new and produce neither an absolute cyberpunk Feeling nor necessarily good songs, especially BILLY IDOL indeed previously entirely electronic and pop influences had in his music.
Unquestionably Cyberpunk has a few good pieces, especially "Shock To The System" sounds very much like Billy Idol and is also anno 2014 still good ear or leg - here is of course ironic that in my view, the strongest song of the album as a very (!) typical BILLY IDOL anthem sounds, the album is thus somehow at the moment the best, at which the artist relies on what he does best (or copying itself, depending on how you want to see the ). But "Neuromancer" or "Concrete Kingdom" are managed. The good pieces of this album are offset by a whole lot of songs that I just find rather unimportant or fade even after 20 years. Cyberpunk is weakening just over the full distance a bit on material, and more power would have used this album tremendously.
No, "bad" within the meaning of "waste" Cyberpunk is no way. It certainly has its moments, a visionary masterpiece can and I was able to herein but not make - more of a Billy Idol album, which simply is not as strong as his heroics, which still contains some good songs and is very well audible.
All in all, I come to rather scarce 3 stars.
