Positives:
- Stable housing completely made of metal - (screwed is underbody) though no unibody, as a result:
- Good haptics, high torsional stiffness, hardly bend, made of brushed aluminum surface very resistant to fingerprints (no comparison with the modern unfortunately just -Sorry - high gloss black piano lacquer shit). The screen is tight, and opens into the closed state a millimeter, no matter how you hold the notebook. The screen can be opened without holding the lower part. I have more expensive laptops from Sony and Samsung possessed that were far less stable and had a higher proportion of plastic in the outer shell.
- Backlit keyboard on which I can personally touch perfectly good pressure points. The stability could be better in the middle, but never bothers me, and does not feel "wobbly" on. The lighting is of course controlled and switches off automatically when not in use the keyboard off automatically, so it is energy-saving.
- Stable, perfectly turned Watched touchpad with fantastic haptics. It is a pleasure, "caress" of this input device to.
- There is peace! Many small but powerful laptops seem to have built-in hair dryer and blow continuously to ensure reasonably humane temperatures. Not so here: aluminum housing and large vents seem to dissipate the heat well. Positive Design Detail: The vents are sunk off the screen display, and at the bottom, are therefore virtually invisible. In normal Internet / Office Use I hardly hear the computer itself in quiet rooms, only slight sound of hard drive reaches the ear. If the fan is at times but he's a gentle buzz from that never turns up annoying. Ergo, the temperatures are easy to use: Even with "lap use" (ie partly covered vents on the underside) is not the laptop anytime.
- The Speaker: The Bang and Olufsen ICEpower sound (within the capacity of such a small tin can) really gigantic - spatially, with bass and without major distortions. Additional speakers are usually unnecessary. The best sound I've ever heard from a laptop of this size.
- Located on the computer for my taste a little bloatware (= superfluous software that usually does nothing else than to annoy and the computer to make slow). While I have spent with other laptops hours trying to remove unnecessary software, and this sometimes important things have cleared, you have it pretty easy here. Compared to Sony, HP or Samsung products that I have owned, Asus has relatively restrained here.
Neutral or "matter of taste":
- It's not a touch screen available, the display is matt. Personally, I am against a laptop no touchscreen, but one or the other may become annoyed, especially since it is officially no longer is an Ultrabook. Whether you prefer the brilliance of glossy displays, or greater suitability sunlight that provide matt displays is really a matter of taste. I have both already possessed, and not dedicate much attention to the aspect anyway. The display was never buying decision for me. Another positive: In "normal" conditions (not too much light in the area) I have the screen brightness at less than a third, and still see everything very well. In battery mode can save as much energy as an average little screen brightness is required.
- For Ethernet and VGA port you need (included) adapter. Since I use the laptop only with WiFi and never connect to projectors or external monitors, me does not matter. But again: It may interfere with one or the other, if the adapters are needed regularly.
- The on / off button is located right next to "Remove". Since you can ever slip away. I personally do not care because I disable the start button on the control panel anyway (ie a shutdown by pressing the key switch off). And: One could even argue that it is abgeguckt with Apple to integrate the Start button so the keyboard.
- Of course, the conventional HDD with 500GB is not as fixed as a SSD, which the measure of things are slow. But I really need even more than 500GB disk space, because I want to have all my data on the notebook, even if it's just a second unit and I own external hard drives. However, a 500GB SSD is not available, and also the 256GB model already costs around 1000 euros. So there must everyone know even if he but for only half will be paid to space 300 Euro for more speed. For me was not in question. Therefore deliberately the base model. Of the 500GB are real way, exactly 444GB usable. If you have Windows 8.1, an office suite, a web browser and a few other common programs (players, Dropbox, antivirus, etc.) installed, you get about 400GB of data thus accommodated, if you make the drive to the brim.
- Nice additions, round package: The laptop comes in a high quality cardboard, a synthetic fiber shell and a small pocket for the adapter is included. On one hand, one wonders whether one wants mitbezahlen it because I decided nevertheless to an additional neoprene sleeve, and will not use the supplied envelope well. On the other hand thus making the overall package a rounder, detailverliebteren impression. I would give this the device but at no extra points.
Negatives:
As I said - personally really nothing for me. The computer meets exactly my claims (apart from the fact that I need more hard drive -. But 750GB or even 1TB are now not to be found in such a small and slim notebooks, to my knowledge, since the SSD provides a bearish storage space anyway this may I the Asus but no points pull).
** UPDATE ** on the Processing Quality: I have now had a number of copies of this laptop in hand. Not everywhere the touchpad is so well fitted like my. Had a copy in his hand, in which the touchpad stood out right and an edge formed, on the one stuck his finger. One should have no hesitation to return the device and to claim compensation, if there are irregularities here. Furthermore, I had a fresh copy Exposed in his hand, which had a strange display errors, in which at one point a "stain" was, so to see an uneven illumination. This does not, however, as "usual" in a black background, but always. Consequence: If in doubt, order this laptop until obtained a cleanly designed device - because then you have a great laptop. Asus needs to work on the quality control here though!
