Little history:
The nadirs, nomadic and warlike people were unified by Ulric, the first major warlords. Repressing their occupants, only the large drenaïe citadel Dros Delnoch had managed to repel (Legend). But a century later, a new warlord Tenaka Khan had broken the Drenai, had seized Dros Delnoch and invaded the land vagriannes (action occurring after King on the Threshold).
For history, some heroes, aging ancient glories of a past fight (a seat held in Bel-azar, Tenaka against Khan, and contrary to what you might read in other reviews, this battle is going after Dros Delnoch fall, it has never been told in a book of the cycle), will join forces to help a young dreamer villagers, save the one he thinks is the woman of his life, kidnapped in As part of a slave raid nadirs.
A classic of fantasy, a young hero pure heart, accompanied with a classic Gemmell of aging but still combative hero, able to overcome, to transcend, their downfall to start looking for a last action.
For once at least, the pursuit, the girl is not a princess, but the daughter of a pig breeder.
But our heroes are taken in a story that exceed, working in their own defense for History (with a capital H).
A pleasant but not memorable story. The heroes are believable, with their past (Bel-azar), weaknesses, history is fluid, punctuated with fight scenes, but it lacks the fervor, this eminently epic that was found in previous volumes and I find a little lacking in this volume.
In short, a small disappointment.
