Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (Batman Dark Knight) (Paperback)

Customer Review

Miller's legendary re-imagining of the Batman which CLEARLY born from the same spirit as Alan Moore's Watchmen: both evoke a gritty, grim, and (in a way) more realistic vision of the superhero phenomenon, and deliver a running commentary on the society That Surrounds Them, cold war anxieties included. While I Certainly enjoyed Miller's work, I felt did it is more simplistic, more lopsided, and more ideologically problematic than the aforementioned Watchmen. You need only to examine Miller's lampooning portrayal of what he perceives to be faint-hearted liberalism to see where his loyalties lie. His Dark Knight is a crypto-fascist hero, believing it is the right deed and duty of the powerful to rise above the common "rabble", and solving society's problems by Means of blunt force. Thus, I award this undisputed classic of a penalty one star.
