Worried adverse effects caused by their lifestyle on the environment (global warming, deforestation, water scarcity, pollution diverse and varied), Colin Beavan, a writer and bohemian New Yorker decided to take the bull by the horns and try an extreme experience: to live for a year with his family by rejecting the least possible waste and CO2. Reduced to almost zero footprint on the environment, become "No Impact Man". He must give up disposable packaging, to use the car and even the elevator. At first all goes relatively well, he is riding a bike, going up and down dozens of stairs, calling the fit and allows him to slim down, but gradually it crosses various levels: give up the toilet paper to plastic layers Children, chemicals, a product of the land uncultivated beyond a perimeter of 400 km and even meat. And it is not over, it has yet to do without electricity. He will reach his goals? How he and his family they emerge from this unusual experience. Book far more serious than it seems at first. This concept is so advanced it could have been fun if the description of this lifestyle had been with humor. But it is not. Beavan is a convinced environmentalist. He wants to lead by example and make us reflect on our lifestyle based on consumerism and a shameful waste of (limited) resources of our planet. His arguments are serious, documented and convincing. The buzz caused by his book and his first experience with a blog then relayed by the media around the world, seems as important than was the publication in its time of "Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson. This case can only give only lead to reflect and awareness in the reader. Some believe that nothing will be done outside the collective action. Beavan said that this collective action will only be the result of thousands of individual stocks, perhaps less radical than his. If you are sensitized to environmental problems, read this book surprising, disturbing and useful, it is a mine ...
