I bought the 85mm / 1.8 along with the 50mm / 1.4, because to me that has 50mm / 1.8 no longer sufficed for the little Avaliable-light photography, I'll do. Below naturally flows just my experience with the 85mm / 1.8.
This is an incredibly beautiful, valent piece of glass with a pleasantly large ridged area to focus in, I immediately felt as ego at the camera had. But I do not want to repeat all the previous reviewers have already gathered here, but concentrate mainly on one aspect, which was a bit too short for me: sports photography with the 85er. In many forums, you will encounter the recommendation for Sport in dark halls (basketball, handball, for example) to use the '85, because it is cheaper than the 70-200 / 2.8 and of course also brings a larger initial aperture and let more light. The focal length is at the Crop wonderful and sufficient eg for handball, where you wonderfully caught behind the goal-standing players in the county or in basketball, at least when behind the basket does not come directly the wall (is with us, fortunately not so). Therefore, one does not necessarily need an expensive 70-200er here.
Due to the large aperture of 1.8, I could do this on my 600D with ISO 400 to 800 beautifully in dark halls pictures without particularly large committee. The exposure time of 1/320 to 1/600 I can choose thus can incredibly beautiful "freeze" movement of individual players and has in addition a nice bokeh, most natural audience / other players / Halle spotlights from the ceiling etc. in Background. A big problem of course is that without any dimming has a very shallow area. As you get precisely as a player at the basket hanging out (I then mostly focus on the basket ring and serviced) but duels are map almost impossible with this aperture, because then at least. A player with muddy, blurred face caught. Fade helps robbed of course but also light, so feel free to follow suit ISO high or to the selected player by prolonged exposure (is still feasible at 1/125 to 1/60).
What I really underestimated, is the lack of flexibility. I got me a few times my zoom to the desired body (desire is unfortunately much faster than switch: P) if the audience jumps up in the stands, or you simply want to get across the times Game Overview. This is why I'm going to save me but along the gray cars yet, of course, I can not clearly influenced the rating, you knew that beforehand that the thing is ne fixed focal length. I'll keep the 85er, is yes (like here 1,000 times) a great part for portraits, cropping objects etc. I wanted you anyway enlighten times about my "experiment" :)
Conclusion: A great alternative if you times now and want to photograph in halls and an almost uncompromising pleasure if you like shooting portraits with creamy bokeh. Especially on Crop ideal etc. Who often meets at concerts to adverse light conditions, should think about a purchase seriously.
If you have questions as always welcome to comment or write :)
