From the beginning the tone is announced: the approach of Michel Onfray will not be very objective but subjective. Indeed Onfray does not think, and rightly, that we can make an objective history of philosophy. Witness all the history books of ancient philosophy which amount to Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics and the Epicureans. The goal is to present Onfray entire continent of ancient philosophy that has been (deliberately?) Forgotten. So if you want a summary of the thought of Aristotle or Plato you will be disappointed. Here you will find a presentation of the philosophy of Democritus, unfairly maligned Sophists, Epicureans late (Lucretius, Philodemos of Gadara, Diogenes of oenanda) or Cyrenaics. Michel Onfray to also written two other books on ancient philosophy, one on the cynical philosophers cynicism, dog portrait of a philosopher. The other philosophy of Cyrenaica: The invention of fun. The book is very easy to read like most books of Onfray. He does not bother with the obscure jargon usually attached to philosophy. However, we can blame him for wanting to do too much against Plato and it seems that it becomes an obsession. Otherwise the process is beneficial and original. In addition, at the end of the book an annotated bibliography which is rare enough to be stressed.
