Douglas Adams writes in great detail about his travel experiences in Africa, China, New Zealand, etc., which is sometimes quite amusing. The experiences with the animals, which usually also were only short-lived, not sound very unusual. He writes that he has little sympathy for people who spend hours settle in the mud to stare at an animal.
