Its image quality is absolutely excellent. All-plastic construction is probably not what is done more robust, but it is similar to what is done at Nikon mid-range, and its strength is quite reasonable. It also gives it a relatively light, which, combined with its compact size (relative, too) is always nice when is its mobility.
The autofocus is probably the weakest point of this objective: rather slow, it is also noisy, and the focus ring rotates when the engine is running. Avoid this goal if you plan to take pictures of action, then prefer a lens with a true ultrasonic motor (be careful with misleading names).
This version lacks optical stabilization, hence its quality / very reasonable prices.
The big benefit of this goal is its great luminosity, with a maximum aperture of f / 2.8. It proves to be invaluable when the lights dim; it reduces camera shake due to movement of the photographer, as would an optical stabilization, but mostly, it can freeze the motion of the subject, what stabilization Optical is unable to contribute.
This opening also starting to play with depth of field, especially 50mm, and develop his artistic talent. If bokeh (background blur quality level) this goal is not a great beauty, it still allows blur effects quite interesting that allow you to highlight a subject, including portrait.
If you wish at any cost optical stabilization plus a large maximum aperture, know that Tamron also provides a stabilized version of "VC" (Tamron - Objective 2,8-17-50 SP DI II N-AF (Nikon Version) ) but less good optically. The Sigma 17-50mm OS (Sigma - Tà © là © Zoom - 17-50mm / F2.8 EX DC OS HSM for Nikon D) is also an interesting alternative.
For me, this type of lens should be included with any camera kit. And since Nikon does not offer in this price range, so take a Tamron. It has its weaknesses, certainly, but its openness actually in my opinion an indispensable tool in the wallet of every amateur photographer (or professional), even when it will turn to less conventional lenses.
