AVM FRITZ! Box 7390 Wireless Router (VDSL / ADSL, 300 Mbit / s, DECT base station, Media Server) (Personal Computers)

Customer Review

I was the proud owner of a Fritz box 7390 including FritzFon MT-F. I was happy. My wife was happy. All our networked devices were happy. And that in turn made me happier.

After a few days I realized, however, that sporadic drop outs came on the telephone: the connection seemed to be silent for a few seconds in both directions, was then for a moment back there, but just as quickly seconds off. This problem was not just with the FritzFon MT-F, but also with my Gigaset A400. The connection of the phone was irrelevant because the symptom was independent on whether the Fritz box was used as a DECT base or the Gigaset base was connected and used through TAE-cable to the Fritz box.

This choppy phone conversations I therefore initially led back to a VoIP fault on VDSL50 port of Telekom and agreed the telecom customer. However, this could not detect any fault, but I prefer to use a recommended telecom router on this occasion. This I could order directly from the hotline and either for purchase or rent cheap. Gratefully, I declined the offer and instead have borrowed an unused Speedport W723V of my neighbors to me. I hardly believe my ears, but the problem was no longer there actually! Of course, could not and I did not want to sit on the FritzBox this disgrace, finally it was the flagship Prestige model 7390. However, after reinstalling the FritzBox the fear became a certainty: the phone calls were cut off again and the problem was obviously at the Fritz box. Even the change from FritzOS 5:50 on the laboratory firmware, as well as shortly after published official update on FritzOS 5:52 or subsequently renewed laboratory firmware brought no improvement.

The call to the AVM support was no more than an interactive guide through the support and FAQ sites that I had of course already been read and considered in terms of "Customer Self Service". Ultimately, you asked me for sending special support diagnostic information that should be created, while the symptom occurs. But this was easier said than done, because another error occurred now, the even more difficult the Fritz-history. The Fritz box is in fact through the wireless data transfer with simultaneous telephone connection (of "telephone call" due to the extremely choppy connection no question) apparently already so busy that the system in an attempt on the mentioned FritzBox support page, the diagnostic data create simply crashes and reboots. Reproducible. Every time. The support data were then created as required immediately after such a reboot. However, after a quick look at the support data so created me it quickly became clear that in the file no problem related records could be found and therefore a diagnosis certainly would not lead to a satisfactory result in this way. These concerns, I made together with the support of AVM data and was now waiting for an answer.

And I waited a long time for a response. After four weeks I picked up the phone again and asked how the problem state was, but was put off that you contact me as soon as there would be new information. So I waited again on contact initiated by AVM.
And again I waited a long time for a response. Another 4 weeks later there was still no new information. Or AVM was either unable or unwilling to solve the problem at hand.
By now I was the choppy phone conversations anyway sorry and therefore the product is complaining that the merchants (Amazon).
Without hesitation I was even sent a return label via email from Amazon customer service during a call and within 24 hours I had a new Fritz box 7390 in the hands. I imagined the problems solved by replacing the putative "Monday device". Unfortunately, this was a fallacy, because even with the replacement device the same symptoms were exactly present: choppy (VoIP) -Telefonverbindung during parallel wireless data transfer.
Incredulous and frustrated I packed the Fritz box again in the box and rang at the neighbors, because I knew that there a Fritz box 7390 has been used. After an initial explanation of the facts, we first checked the neighbor Fritz box - at its terminal and with its terminals. And then I had to made "my" problem "his" problem, because with him the same phenomenon was to determine exactly. He knew not only so far.
As also technology-enthusiastic contemporary my neighbor agreed to intensify further to help me in the further problem isolation. He therefore created a backup of his FritzBox settings, put the Fritz box back to factory settings, the Fritz box built with off and on with me. The result was negative as expected: choppy telephone connection in parallel wireless data transfer.

I contacted therefore again the Amazon customer service and expected the return of Fritz box including FritzFon completely problem was again possible. The description of the problem was even taken very attentive and grateful because Amazon has this problem much larger-scale effects: Regardless of whether the problem can be solved by a firmware update (QoS implementation, wireless drivers, VOIP implementation) or but may even present an uncorrectable hardware error (this could also be explained reproducible reboots), there are no signs to the production error of a single FritzBox but obviously a problem of the entire product line! Whether there would be a sell-stop, could not answer me on the phone, but I admit that I will pursue the Amazon offering in the coming days and weeks stretched.

Unfortunately, AVM is silent about the problems until today. I do not expect that AVM will solve the problem immediately, but probably within half a year to admit the problem, and also worked with the customer maintains contact as part of this problem solving and informed him! In the last phone call with AVM was even suggested that it would be likely to lead problems of my publisher (though I had this demonstrably refuted). I dread to think how many dissatisfied customers, Telekom (or other providers of IP-based telephony), because this phone connectivity issues are supposedly on the IP port to me.

Until the problem satisfactorily resolved, is probably probably pass some time. Perhaps AVM hopes indeed to be able to sit out on the issue until the new Fritz box 7490 goes on sale in the fall. As long as I will therefore refrain from the use of a Fritz box and have now taken the way, actually the rented router offer the Telekom hotline services. Although the Speedport W724v lacks many of the Fritz box functions, particularly the integrated voice box with conversation recording function or mail notification of Reconnect, calls and other events. But at least I can now again make phone calls without having to worry beforehand that no wireless device performs a data transfer.

The FritzBox 7390 has indisputably the presumably largest range compared to other SOHO routers. Given this functionality, it is quite difficult for AVM to ensure a consistently high level of accuracy. Worthily AVM therefore have long been users early versions included by the laboratory and laboratory firmware app in the development process. But if the primary basic functions of an explicitly VOIP-enabled wireless router are not guaranteed, and as a manufacturer AVM encountered this problem with apparent disinterest, then this issue needs to be discussed in my eyes on public stage. The only way to AVM the necessary pressure be built up, I as an individual is unable to produce the. Therefore, I have already agreed various press newsrooms.

Given the described problems (and taking into account the ever-growing number of IP-based telephone connections), I speak for the AVM Fritz box 7390 the clear recommendation from this not to buy!

Addendum of 26/07/2013:
Through lively exchange in various online portals and forums, the presumption seems to confirm that the underlying problem of too weakly dimensioned chip / processor of the Fritz box is. You may also see the hardware control on driver or kernel level is implemented poorly, but this has the identical effect: Not only with wireless transfer, the CPU is operating at full capacity, but also in USB use or VPN use. This explains very plausible why the Fritz box with parallel use of WLAN, VoIP telephony and support data creation crashes: the Fritz box is overloaded and protects itself with the reboot itself!

Addendum of 08/08/2013:
After nearly two months "intermission" has given me the AVM support send the message that the AVM issue is now known by a number of customer reports. But it would probably also related to each network client or the local network infrastructure. That sounds not only understandable but must logically be absolutely correct: For the utilization of the FritzBox course depends directly of the respective network client from! Only "newer" wireless cards can the so-called. Stream-pooling, which brings the Fritz box to its limits at the maximum possible speed. See also Wikipedia article on "IEEE 802.11n" in the art.)
In the current laboratory firmware already some small changes were incorporated, which should lead to improvement. The next final firmware version the problem solution should be found throughout.
I was told to demand that this problem is definitely not to be existent in 7490. I will therefore now wait for the whole thing to rest, watch and then think about whether there will be a new Fritz box (7490) or not.

Addendum of 02/09/2013:
Switching on the CT-Editor of the Heise Verlag AVM has now added the presence of this error. However, AVM has the only acknowledged by the intense and persistent prodding by the CT Editor, which has carried out even its own testing laboratory in the editorial. According to AVM is to take place in September via firmware update troubleshoot alleged. With the already waiting laboratory firmware the problem had already been addressed. Since the laboratory firmware has however brought no improvement, I think my thesis still maintains that there could be a problem due to undersized hardware rather than a software error. Unfortunately, reinforced this impression, as well as the new Fritz box 7490 at the USB 3.0 port provides miserable data transmission rate (see the relevant Amazon review: under 20MB / s, ie just USB 2.0 level), which already in 7390 by officials clearly undersized chipset performance was attributed. Presumably, therefore, also has the 7490 the same problems, but this would have to be from one owner 7490 tested on a VoIP connection and maximum WLAN transmission in the frequency band of 11ac. In principle, the probability is very big in my eyes but that this problem can be solved by a firmware update neither in 7390 nor in 7490.

Addendum of 05/12/2013:
For unknown reasons, all Amazon review have disappeared for FritzBox 7390. Therefore, I present my review online again.

Addendum of 24/12/2013:
1. The identical error image was thanks to the extensive testing of the user "mgutt" now also been proven for FritzBox 7490.
2. A big thank you to the many hard-working users for their feedback on my review. This could now be ruled out that the use of the integrated VDSL modems related to the error. Much more, the problem also reproduce when the 7390 only as an access point and VoIP Gateway and the Internet connectivity is outsourced. Already with internal network traffic can the Fritz box full capacity so that VoIP calls are impossible.
3. If there is a Fritz box under the Christmas tree, there is hopefully an analogue or ISDN connection. Otherwise (ie: in the case of a VOIP phone line) I hope you enjoy and good nerves! In my experience, Amazon takes with reference to this problem the Fritz box without hesitation without hesitation back. ;)
But perhaps AVM Fritz box makes its customers still a surprising gift with a problem-solving while ...;)
(I personally think, however, from a technical perspective for excluded, because many other users are unfortunately confirmed my suspicion that there is an actual hardware problem not solved by a software update, but can be bypassed by more than functional limitations.)
4. Merry Christmas and happy new year!

Addendum of 08/04/2014:
Only through the recently completed city-changing, I again intensively occupied myself with finding alternatives to the Fritz box and is therefore still a telecom rental equipment (Speedport W724v) at my home. This is true in terms of functionality is not as extensive as a Fritz box, but it runs perfectly so far.

Anticipation note the following:
Who has "normal" claims and prefers an "out-of-the-box" solution of a configurable solution that is well-advised with a Speedport. For "intensive" claims there depending on the application, different possibilities for the realization of the three central network functions (modem, router and Access Point). The calling feature I consider further here, because I'm going to outsource this to an IP phone. This can be the IP phone under the local network connection (eg via Power-LAN) namely set completely independently of the router.
Note for Speedport users: The Telekom Speedports "block" necessary for VoIP SIP ports exclusively for their own use. Even port forwarding (NAT) does not help, so that behind the Speedport connected IP phones have no chance for a connection. So if you want to use an IP phone behind his router, must renounce the use of a speed ports.

The following devices I have identified for the use of a telecom Entertain connection with VDSL50 for Triple Play (VoIP, IP-TV, Internet) after an intensive search:

1. DrayTek Vigor 130
This is a so-called. "Modem Router" and accomplished the VDSL-dial and the necessary WAN side VLAN tagging (VLAN 7 for Internet and VoIP, VLAN 8 for IP-TV). In addition to VDSL (band plan: 997, 998) is also Vectoring for VDSL2 supports (VDSL2 profiles 8a, 8b, 8c, 8d, 12a, 12b, 17a, 30a). The device can be used both in the "modem only" (PPPoE passthrough) and in the "Bridge" mode to operate (the latter mode is mostly referred to as "routers" in the vernacular, technically it is, however, a "Bridge") and has 1 Gigabit port. For my application, the do just fine, because I have a IGMPv3-capable managed switch (Netgear GS108E-100PES) used for further distribution anyway. With the expansion of the wired network you are completely free in this scenario, in the choice of access points for wireless is not built into the device. Who wants to build anyway a WDS wireless, use an Apple Airport or other access points, is this unit very well (at a cost of about 100).
DrayTek also appliances are produced (eg the Vigor 2760er, 2850er or 2860er series) that can accommodate it with respect. Featured quite loose with the Fritz boxes (VoIP, WLAN, VPN, USB devices, etc.). However, the Draytek devices work correctly and in case of problems is obtained also very timely support (at least as far as I could find out so far by Google and Board Search). Moreover, the high end devices Draytek series even offer very interesting professional functions that enable the home-demand exciting scenarios. For example: By using the VPN functionality of the access to a VLAN in the domestic network is made possible, so that the Entertain functions (eg including Sky) can also be used away from the home network to their own mobile devices. The same applies to the use of VoIP over VPN, so you also on the phone (using appropriate SIP software) can always be reached on their own landline number, but also (thanks to Entertain fixed flat rate) for free in dt. Can landlines ,

2. Zyxel VMG1312-B30A
This is also a "modem-router", but in addition provides the WLAN via the 11b / g / n standards. This equipment is also offered by Telekom itself, but for the "business" area (Google search with "ZyXEL vmg1312-B30A Telekom"). In some forums, including its support forums of Zyxel or Telekom, reported problems Entertain use. Here, however, there seems to be a problem to act specifically in ADSL connections. An explicit demand at Zyxel support if any problems when using still exist on a Entertain VDSL50 triple-play connection, was clearly in the negative. There are 4 LAN ports available, but "only" with Fast Ethernet (100Mbps), for the (maximum supported) VDSL profile 17a which is perfectly adequate. If you are looking for cheap Wireless Modem Router for its VDSL Entertain port, should be happy with this (cost: about 110).

3. ALLNET ALL500VDSL2 Rev.B
Apart from the external (and rotating) antennas I could actually find any significant differences from the Zyxel VMG1312-B30A. Compared to the Zyxel is given the more favorable price for bargain hunters with wireless desire certainly a very interesting alternative (cost: 80-90).

Personally, I have decided on the DrayTek Vigor 2760, as this unit is well prepared for the future (Vectoring and profile 30a) and the manufacturer or support focused to accomplish the angespriesenen functions faultlessly even. With the latest firmware also DrayOS keeps on Vigor 2760 collection. DrayOS is the operating system for professional routers of DrayTek offers grandiose configuration options (a live demo of DrayOS you can watch on the website to Draytek 2860). The inclusion of additional separate WLAN access points (eg with OpenWRT on cheap routers) can be his own "Roaming Cell" WLAN tinker (with Ethernet backbone), so then everywhere is home consistently best wireless reception.
