Develop:
Concerning the book itself first. With a size of a great novel, it enjoys a strong and rigid cover, a cloth bookmark (a nice touch). However, it contains no illustration, so if you are looking for an artbook, this book is not for you. 223 pages, much less removing blank pages. The working pro, with a bibliography 218-219 pages that can see which elements (interviews / books) author has relied to advance this or that scenario elements. You will not be able to tell you that the author invented. Some careless mistakes such Page 22 "They then started then," but nothing too bad.
As for content, the book is divided into 6 chapters (not exhaustive of course):
- 1: the universe. This echoes the history of FF X in chronological order, from the early history of the war between Zanarkand and Bevelle, until the end of Final Fantasy X-2 (yes I said it was going until audio extract, but in another chapter). This renewed perspective will allow many fans to understand the links between such and such events, in addition to adding the revelations made by Square Enix on the script in Ultimania books. It also has a section on geography Spira, and on the people who live there. It also lacks a few people, but I guess that the author did not have enough elements to develop, it is better to avoid them than to invent.
- 2: the characters: there was the story of the team members of FF X FFX-2, and some enemies such as Seymour or Shuyin (besides some rédits with the first chapter), with bonus the meaning and history of some names.
- 3: analysis and interpretation: a very interesting chapter which parallels our world and the world of Spira. For example, the author evokes the symbolism of death and the beyond, beyond which is inspired by Shinto consideration of death. Very important, the place of the Church, its operation the concept of Sin akin to sin which obviously remind Christianity.
- 4: creation: the author explains here how the game was we designed, developers of setbacks due to the complex architecture of PlayStation 2, or Asian inspiration, not only from Japan for that matter, for create the universe. Subsequently is discussed the unprecedented fact of proposing a suite, FFX-2. Are also covered (and I guess that's why the book was postponed several times), X-FF 2.5 and extract audio from remaster. I enjoyed the summary of FFX 2.5, which allows to understand the history, and have to realize how this novel is ridiculous. The issue of FF X-3. Finally, portraits of the most important developers of the team.
- 5: decryption: This is to analyze the impact of FF X, its reception by the public, but more generally it is an analysis of the world after the RPG Final Fantasy X, the square of effort to use a world inspired by Asia without "shock" or too disorient Western gamers etc.
- 6: music: small eight-page chapter, which focuses on the inspirations of the OST
But I brought a black spot, I do not répercuterai on the note as the book is of great quality.
Damien Mecheri has notably helped Ultimania books to describe the history and the universe. At no time, it addresses the question of the existence of the dream of praying, or at least he considered a parallel place outside the world.
Indeed, the Zanarkand Tidus knows that is not just a dream, it is a place "real" or at least physical, located near Baaj Temple in the ocean. This element, which in particular how Auron could enter, how Jecht was able to get out (it says in the book he is sucked out, but how?), I think is important enough to be developed. See maybe in a future reissue.
In conclusion: If you liked FF X, I highly recommend Legend Final Fantasy X, you will not regret it.
