Update II (28.1.2012):
The support of WD has at last responded - after 14 days and 4 mails, and after I announced the return of the equipment in the 4th mail.
Meanwhile I had found out that the Mac access works via SMB, but the Apple File Protocol (AFP) is no longer supported. I had also communicated to the support from WD.
Quality of responses: Poor would be flattered:
Excerpts:
"When can AFP be broken You can if you are using SMB but to access your data, may I ask you to try it." - Oh great, great help.
"With firmware issues a new installation of the firmware and then a reset of the My Book World to the factory settings must be carried out." - Well fine, then all of the stored data is gone, so I would need on an external FP cache. Takes hours, besides, I have not.
In summary it can be said that the support sucks. A problem-solving has not been possible by an initially good product only very limited use. Fortunately, the problems occurred on shortly before the 2-year warranty ...
Update I (early January 2012):
After setting up the WD firmware update end of November 2011 to version 01:02:12 you can not connect with a Mac to share folders, regardless of the OS X (10.6.8 and 10.7.1 both: Could not connect ). A return setting and restarting will not help.
Securing means Time Machine still works. Access via Windows XP works well.
Support from WD does not answer, since now 8 business days.
Too bad, a first really great product is now only very limited use, therefore, instead of 4 star now only 1 star possible.
After purchase:
Finally, a network hard drive that works seamlessly and perfectly integrated in the software Philisophie Apple without copying their proud rates.
Had several NAS drives from Buffalo previously in use and was believed to be found only in Microsoft philosophy of this product group.
Far from it: The WD is connected to the grid (Fritz box), Time Machine set up (according to User's Manual of WD) - and that's it. Perfect!
Plus - points:
+ Silently in standby
+ Extremely quiet operation
+ Efficient power saving mode
+ Torrent Downloader
+ Raid 1 preset
+ Fast enough for imperceptible backup in the background
Minus point, therefore only 4 stars:
- The user menus are very slowly via browser. Who wants more than just the default use must adapt to wait ...
- The operating instructions you should have completely read before, as one or the other password is required ...
It depends on us a Mac with a cable to the router, a MacBook and a Windows XP laptop via WLAN. The decor was a no brainer for everyone and it all works beautifully.
Summary: Absolute buy recommendation.
