Encouraged by the positive reviews and the clear Home Page of Synology I fetched this 411j NAS. I have the plates from the self's NAS taken: 4 x 500GB Western Digital and they created a RAID5 array, yielded a total of about 1.36 TB. These run as AFP Share and simultaneously (on the same volume) Time Machine Share.
What I noticed is:
- The station is quiet when the plates tend to roar, but blaring the entire housing (be "tough" on plastic rails in a metal frame coupled)
- Well cooled, 2 x rear fan
- Power supply is outsourced (120 W power) - good for cooling
- Build quality is very good, living room compatible (except for the noise) - for me the NAS is in the basement of a UPS. Advantage: less cooling needed
- The huge advantage of this NAS is the "operating system" (DSM) - something good I have not yet seen. Absolutely easily set up, even beginners get along well, and if you know your way, even better. Very complicated, with sliding windows in the web GUI and a very good clarity, similar to MAC OS (see. Control Panel).
- The SMART functions of the boards are well used
- The e-mail notification of inconsistencies / warnings seem to work well.
- The DSM software throws a formally with functions that you just have to but fortunately did not use (Download Manager, Email Server, etc.).
- Everything is going smoothly. Time Machine (Lion / 10.7!) Goes without problems immediately
I run the 411j with DSM 3.2
A thick buy recommendation from the computer.
