So I have the same time the following 4 Radio tested (all firmware versions = aktuelleste versions from the beginning of April 2009):
- Sangean "WFT-1" (passive, with remote control, firmware V1.1.6.13039-1)
- Terratec "NOXON 2 radio for iPod" (active, with remote control, firmware 6394)
- Philips "NP2500" (passive, with remote control, firmware 5.75S)
- Freecom "MusicPal" (active, no distance service, firmware 1.59d)
Let me mention that all radios have the UPnP streaming ruled properly by the Fritz! Jukebox. All radios were connected for the first test directly to the LAN cable, no WiFi.
Only the review for the Philips NP2500. Are the reviews for each device for other Internet radios.
For following Philips device is also to say that the mentioned negative points "at a high level", that not everyone would be bothered by it.
Philips "NP2500":
*****************
+ Very nice, simple design that conveys a very high-quality impression
++ Excellent color display and large font, which must be read from a distance well
++ Excellent navigation options, all major functions have their own buttons on the remote control
+ A "Shuffle" function for random playback is its own button on the remote control immediately accessible
+ It has a coaxial digital output and has great sound quality through headphones
+ After switching playback will start at the last point before switching off
+ Both fixed LAN connection and WPA2-encrypted wireless connection with the Fritz box 7270 functioned immediately properly (despite hidden wireless SSID)
+ Playback of WAV files and M3U playlists is working properly
- It has no navigation options on the device, the remote control is mandatory
- While navigating a bit annoying that the currently viewed image will always be "wiped out" completely to the right (as with a quick slide show)
- The list of countries of internet radio is completely unsorted, not comprehensible why
- It obviously has something little buffer because needs when scrolling through the Internet radio stations are constantly recharged (egg timer for 5 sec.)
- The UPnP streaming you have to navigate through 6 levels until you get to the root of his music collection (Music -> Fritz jukebox -> Music -> Folder -> USB flash drive -> root). At Freecom MusicPal however, you are immediately in the root directory, so there is another way.
Conclusion:
******
Through the UPnP standard can now be accessed centrally in your music collection without the computer must be running. Companies like Logitech with their own streaming options which require a SqueezeCenter PC software or a special NAS server for streaming, have thus themselves marginalized.
Unacceptable was the rhythmic hum of the Sangean "WFT-1" and the poor operating concept of Terratec "NOXON 2 radio for iPod". When Philips and Freecom device everyone should decide for its intended use, whether the negative points are relevant or not. I kept finally the Philips device for the living room and the Freecom device for the bedroom.
