Impressive recording is quite. Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (and the recording technology of EMI) play here all of their advantages. Finely detailed, sovereign, with a big bow of fine lyric to powerful sound pompous. The (often underestimated) early symphonies sounded here as great masterpieces.
That Karajan is well handled compositions always free and self-willed and it has changed in interpretation to create a stronger impression on the listener, is known (and the original sound-trailers a nuisance).
Beautifully played happens played beautifully. Such klangberauschend hear Schubert probably rarely.
