Customer Review

For over a year now I use the Olympus OM-D E-M5 and am really pleased. Now I had the opportunity to test the new E-M10 a couple of days and would like to share my impressions here.

Note: this review is aimed mainly at those who already know the E-M5 or other Olympus cameras system, have already dealt with this in detail, or are trying to decide between E-M10 and E-M5. All without any prior knowledge should first look at some other reviews, as this review may be only partially helpful otherwise.

>>>>>> PROCESSING <<<<<<<

The build quality is really absolutely great, the camera actually feels really robust, what it shows on the weight that is with 400g for the size of the camera quite a lot. The control wheels at the top turn around very nicely with the necessary resistance. In comparison, processing the E-M5 is still a little better the control wheels to rotate at a little more supple and everything still feels a bit more robust, which may have been located at the dust and splash protection. However, you notice the difference only when the cameras directly be compared side by side.
The buttons on the E-M10 are made of plastic and act but a little cheap, but they are now really nice and not as spongy klicki how the E-M5.

# Interim conclusion >>>>>>>> Although the E-M5 just a tad bit more robust effect is the E-M10 processed really first class and looking in this price range second to none.

>>>>>> Handling / Ergonomics / customizability <<<<<<<<

Although the E-M10 the E-M5 is visually very similar, it is a bit better in the hand and is easy to operate, which is due to 4 little things a little better:
See 1.Kaum, but the handle is a smidgen of molded.
2.The surface of the handle grip can be felt when the E-M5.
3.The operating two wheels at the top look a little bit more about the edge of the case and also be somewhat higher. In addition, the left rear control dial is a bit further right than with the E-M5, and can be something better reach with your thumb.
4.Da the keys are not as spongy, they can be much better and more comfortable use.

In addition, the E-M10 offers even a combined ISO / WB button that you can press the Menu button with a control wheel the ISO value and change to the other white balance. I like very much because so again a key is free that you can prove something else.
Overall, one can again individually adjust the E-M10 and adjust as closely to his wishes. Unfortunately, a couple of Olympus typical peculiarities have remained.
-It Can not occupy all key with all functions. So the choice is to functions that can be put on the buttons on the four-way cross very limited and some functions (eg metering system) absent.
-For Some important features you have still in the right nested menu eg Auto ISO limit and noise reduction.
-It Can not be different ads to display / viewfinder combine eg spirit level and live histogram, it is always only all individually.
-The User goes back to the time without touch function and is accordingly rather ill-suited for touch operation. How to use the touch function mostly for focusing.

While it is not wrong, the Olympus will keep its operation and consistent user interface, but a little makeover would not hurt, because some things still seem a bit antiquated.

Interim conclusion # >>>>> Although Olympus has a few idiosyncrasies is the operation, through the two control wheels and the assignable buttons really very good. In addition, the camera is a bit better in the hand as the E-M5 and the keys are comfortable to use. The possibilities of the touch function are still not fully exploited.

>>>>>>>>>> EQUIPMENT / FEATURE <<<<<<<<<<<<

The viewfinder of the E-M10 I liked even better than on the E-M5. This is because that adjusts the brightness of the viewfinder to the ambient light and that it is even better to overlook.
The display now offers a higher resolution and LCD instead of OLED technology. The difference you can already see, a really major upgrade is the but not, as the resolution was good even with the E-M5.
A very nice touch is clearly the new pop-up flash. In the E-M5 I have the little Aufsteckblitz almost never USER because you just do not often know beforehand whether one does not need him or. And to make the flash constantly suspected me it was too cumbersome.
The new 3-axis stabilizer is again very good, but not quite as good as that of the 5-axis stabilization of the E-M5. In my test shots I was able to offset about one exposure level less.
Range of functions the E-M10 offers so much more as the E-M5 HDR, interval function, Fokuspeeking ... there is below a fairly detailed list of differences.

# Interim conclusion >>>>>>> The E-M10 is really very equipped with plants and has just about everything has been missing on the E-M5 and much more.

>>>>>>>>>>> IMAGE QUALITY / kit lens <<<<<<<<<<<<

The new pancake zoom M.Zuiko 14-42mm EZ is really the ideal partner for this camera and perfectly supports the compactness of the camera. The build quality is even better than I would have thought feels really good at the little thing. Visually, I found it a little bit better as the M.Zuiko 12-50mm. Also nice is that the lens automatically extends and retracts again and you do not have to like the 14-42mm II lock with a switch. However, there are for the lens hood or no one can use to screw only one, where it could then be problems with vignetting at wide angle. Unfortunately, during my tests always bad weather so I could not test the behavior in strong sunlight.
To compare the image quality I have screwed on both cameras the M.Zuiko 12-40mm. To make a long story short, I have as good as can not notice any differences. It was not until 6400 saw the pictures of the E-M10 slightly better less dull colors and pleasant noise behavior.

# Interim conclusion >>>>>> The new 14-42mm pancake zoom shows up as the ideal partner and is visually strong. From the picture quality was there are hardly any differences for E-M5. Bad this is not because it is still amazing. Sharpness, color and dynamic range are superb and very good JPEG engine produces really great pictures.

>>>>>>> Autofocus / SPEED <<<<<<<<

Real differences in speed between E-M10 and E-M5 I could find neither good, nor in poor light conditions.
The burst rate of the E-M5 is a bit higher, but I did not really important find since the C-AF has become even better.
However, the number of AF points has increased from 35 to 81, which is now more accurate focusing is possible without taking the zoom function to help.

# Interim conclusion >>>>>>>> Except to the number of AF points has little change on autofocus and speed. However, the AF was previously one of the fastest for single shots and still is.

-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------

>>>>>>>>> CONCLUSION <<<<<<<<<<

Olympus has here delivered clean work properly and puts down a really good camera in the upper entry-level segment. The E-M5 is recommended only for those who really necessarily need to dust and splash protection and 1 EV-step that the 5-axis stabilization brings out more. For all other e-M10 offers simply the better price-performance ratio. A switch from the E-M5 on the E-M10, however, is not worth it again, but it has then but not enough new.
I liked the E-M10 really liked definitely and if I had the choice again, I would probably prefer the E-M10, although the E-M5 also has its merits.
