Beyond a simple, yet another thriller, this is a fabulous book about the novel we MAY Robert, one of those novels that refer to masterpieces like "Only silence" of RJ Ellory. While the reader is confronted with a mystery plot but especially to a prodigious historical and social fresco movingly tells the tragic story of the orphans that deporting Catholic church on the Hebrides as slaves to host families. In this description of a rough rural society of mid-twentieth century, we find echoes of the evocations of Iceland or Norway Indridason Unni Lindell. We find for sure clean accents to this Nordic literature does not just offer us detective stories but inserts them into a confusing and enchanting environment that is as far as the suspense, the engine of the novel. You let yourself be taken by this story, served by a seductive style, alternating eras and viewpoints. The gaze of the old MacBride, dementia, his life and his surroundings is perfectly rendered and effectively serves the narrative. In the end the suspense and action clearly resume their rights for a grand finale. A great success that this novel which I highly recommend, beyond the very specific circle of crime fiction lovers, for those who like fine literature and mystery.
