Noticeable here is the use of the piano, although Howard uses always this often in his soundtracks, however, almost never in the big action moments. But even the cello, which Maya Beiser (The Happening) is played back, often comes to light and sounds, especially in the more sinister moments.
In the 57 minutes we get offered a really entertaining and atmospheric score. Although Howard composed nothing new, but his work is solid and primarily recharged with energy. Just the beginning and especially the end (Ghosting and After Earth) stand out with their driving force.
Otherwise there are many horror elements, as I said, nothing fancy, but Howard knows how to deal with this fresh musical clichés. The whole is supported by a gloomy jungle atmosphere in the center of the music.
The biggest shortcoming is in my eyes, the lack of topics! At least three points in the score would be perfect for large-scale issues is something inexplicable why Howard did the ideas unused. An issue for fear that indeed such a big issue plays in the movie, and then another for Will Smith and his son, I believe that there enough potential was there ...
Conclusion: Despite the lack of issues Score has also the problem that you notice when listening that the film fails to offer much and it already is almost a waste for Howards talent, because the man can write great music, you have to him what give to filmic material, even if Shayamalans previous works were also very poor in quality)
Nevertheless, a good score, which has more than two good points!
