A total of 13 titles, all figuring under the subtitle Short Stories, unfold all under one topic not designated. Quasi the school secret of Beyond The Missouri Sky is the yearning. The feeling that experienced sparkling spirits in a province setting is only to describe the irrepressible need for the breaking out of the cramped and claustrophobic conditions. What the two musicians on this album, however, succeeded in the semantic trick to revolt not only against the narrowness and the resulting melancholy, but to show the sadness itself a profound reference. Both musicians have managed to escape, Haden's next stop was New York, Metheny it moved to Miami, but both were nourished and their emotional world from the immensity of the missourischen heaven, the creative source of both a lifetime nourished with its interplay of horizontal dimensions.
Whatever the composition, it is I, it is always about the question of what gives these inspirations sky and to the necessary conclusions that can be drawn from it. Whether in Message To A Friend, Two For The Road, The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress or He's Gone Away, there are the emotional worlds that are touched that arise from loneliness and bring the longing for distance expressed. Especially when He's Gone Away is the out of the sky all inspiring consequence to a unique musical metamorphosis. The theme is always driven by Metheny to the edge of the melodic lines of Amazing Graze and thereby brings the emotional ambiguity expressed: Getting off caused not only parting and sorrow, but also the solemn mood of liberation. In the subsequent Moonsong where Metheny as bringing in any other on this album is inspired by the guitarist Wes Montgomery expressed, it creates Charlie Haden, with his bass lines on the one hand to underpin a classic jazz rhythm and on the other hand, the somnambulist a walk on the to simulate moon.
Beyond The Missouri Sky was added in 1996. His creative force and his outgoing of melancholy and longing force are now unbroken. This is not a vile work of the zeitgeist, but the musical arrangement of a universal theme. Beyond The Missouri Sky is a successful setting of longing.
