Antonio Lotti: Requiem / Miserere / Creed (CD)

Customer Review

It was in 1999 that were published these "world premiere recordings" of three works of sacred music a little-known Italian composer - Baroque: Antonio Lotti (1667-1740). This was the "Requiem", the "Miserere" and "Credo". It must be said first that these three partitions are - in itself - very well made, with an overall dominance of choral parts on those instrumental. The "Miserere" (track 25) thereby virtually disappear while orchestral accompaniment (except an organ, light background). Interpreters (Balthasar-Neumann-Ensemble and Balthasar-Neumann-Chor) under the leadership of their founder Thomas Hengelbrock, gather a team of German musicians in the service of these works. This is a real success, expressing both anxieties (with the idea of death) and the hope of believing in the resurrection. The choir largely dominates. But there are also pages during which women speak solo voices crystal clear ("Requiem": tracks 6, 11, and 15). We even have a countertenor demonstrating a good vocal technique ("Requiem": range 18). In sum, these beautiful scores - revealed here in a very good way - who are in the great tradition of the masses for the dead of the Baroque, do not lack pace. It is therefore understandable why Haydn and Mozart later supported on this type of music to compose their own works (awesome) of sacred music.
