I want to talk about the new Synology NAS DS414 and declare what I use it, what are my impressions and how the initial installation expires. This review I write in parallel with the installation.
First, unpack the DiskStation and be fitted with hard drives. I opted for 4x 3TB Western Digital RED.
It is installed without tools. This means that the hard drives are in a frame "clicked" and then pushed into the housing of the DS.
Now connect to the network (LAN cable CAT5e 2 attached) and connect it to the mains and switch on. It probably makes sense upstream UPS. I opted for a model of APC. For this I write something as soon as everything was put into operation.
The DS is now on - it runs surprisingly quiet. I sit a few feet away from her and she hardly can perceive.
Ok, the operating system is missing now only times. For its installation, I downloaded and launched the program "Synology Assistant". It recognized both the old and the new DS211 DS414. The new has come up to give a free IP address via DHCP.
Now click on "Connect" - now a Web interface comes directly from the DS. So completely empty they seem to be at all.
Here follow the brief and clear instructions - I downloaded me beforehand the latest DSM version (OS). These can be selected and installed. That takes a long time and not at the DS returns with the usual login screen.
The next step is the creation of volumes. Ie one entscheided which RAID type you want to use to connect the hard drive. I opt for the four disks for a RAID. 5
What I advance is realize that the web interface is built up faster than in the DS211.
The next steps:
- Setting Up User
Configure Enable and Services / Services -
- Copy data from the DS211
Setting backup solution with external hard drive -
- Testing
- Switch off the DS211 and DS414 use
The DS created degree the volume and I update the review as soon as possible.
UPDATE 1:
One of WD RED disks was broken and could not be mounted. Once it has been replaced I write more here ...
UPDATE 2:
Since the replacement disk is only delivered, I decided to create the RAID 5 over first three drives and expand later. A nice test whether the well works. Of course I will still advance to create a backup of important data. How do I do that exactly, I will write here.
Currently copied the DS211 or the ~ 1,8TB Data as "backup" to the DS414. For this purpose I have in the DS414 in Control Panel - enabled> Network Backup to Network Backup Sets. The DS211 is a task "Backup" creates. Main Menu -> Backup and Restore. It could be set up quickly - the copy but now lasted almost 24h.
In addition, this process is slow, because the newly created RAID will be "tested" on the 414. I'm not sure if that would have been necessary. Fact is, which is ~ 50% degree of progress and also requires ~ 50% of the CPU.
The data is copied to the DS414 in an automatically created folder "NetBackup". From there, move / I distribute the data then once the process is complete.
One problem I see currently: I've been a common DS211 genutzen CalDav calendar with tasks. The files just copy is not sufficient, because the new DS does not recognize them as their own calendar.
What I've done: The satellite receiver mounts already two folders on the new DS414 and write new recordings to it. I am delighted that it worked without any problems. This is the way to a VU + Solo2 receiver. The DS is the Mount freely via NFS. (Set user previously - one of the folder should only have read access).
What already works: The Denon AVR 3311 recognizes the DLNA access "DiskStation". Play I test when the files are copied.
UPDATE 3 (Conclusion):
The work has been completed. Everything funtkioniert well.
First, I have an external hard drive (1TB) connected and created the "Time backup" in the DS for the main folder.
The fourth hard drive has been retrofitted and added to the volume. This worked without problems. Synchronization duration is about 2 days.
After a test of all the functions I have the NAS in the attic installed (incl. UPS).
The model "APC Back UPS Pro 550VA UPS" is compatible.
I let this configuration now only times running - if everything fits, delete my DS211 and sell them.
Overall, I am very satisfied and can recommend the DS 414.
Pro / Con:
+ Easy setup / configuration
+ Great features (NFS, Time Machine, file server (PC & Mac); DLNA; backup; CalDav) and everything works! Prima
+ Quiet and energy saving
- Overworked my Gigabit-LAN in Windows file transfer is not made (about 60-70 MB / s)
Should I even noticed what I report here.
Have fun with the DS 414!
Update to 1.5 years duration:
Still I am very satisfied. The unit handled discreetly and easily his service.
