Vincent Bremont, inspector of the Paris PJ drift past year in alcohol following the suicide of his beloved wife. He divides his time between his work, his daughter Julia aged a dozen years and his friend, Michel, a former cop who left the service following an unclear case. And now a complete stranger just get whacked at his second home in Cabourg with her address written on a piece of paper and it is the first on the scene. It does not take more that Vincent is considered the prime suspect in the eyes of the local police. To get out of this country of shadows, he will overcome all the trials and to bring forth light on this murky affair? This book is more than a pure detective fiction thriller. The riddle (evident in the background) is difficult reveals after a somewhat slow start. The plot is pretty simple in the end account although very effective with characters entirely conventional in such literature as the weary and alcoholic cop, but is treatable. Easy and pleasant style despite some repetition too systematic. "In the land of shadows" was awarded a well deserved "Quai des Goldsmiths Award 2010".
