So I was looking for my first camera system, combines the compactness and image quality at a high level. Since the Canon had now fallen dramatically in price (Media Markt Nuremberg 375 incl. Flash u. 18-55mm), I decided to try it once with her. Here are my personal impressions:
When unpacking you realize the extremely good processing of Canon. Magnesium housing, kit lens made of metal (not only the bayonet) - nothing creaks when spirited grabs. The buttons have a clear pressure point and the wheel has a nice resistance and does not rotate by itself at random come.
Due to its compact size and the relatively high weight, keeping the Canon is a little problematic and I find myself more and more while keeping the camera with your left hand on the lens. Why Canon also in the fixing of carrying handles its own agenda, knows well only Canon itself.
The operation via touchscreen is for beginners like me Neuland. Although I personally prefer and buttons and switches, but with time you get used to it. Only if the monitor has not been switched off and the camera dangles by shoulder belt on the abdomen, it may be that, for example, always moves the autofocus measuring field by itself. But for the touch screen also reacts with an attached (anti-reflective) screen protector outstanding. And that is necessary, as in bright sunlight on the display difficult thing to realize. Monitor provide lighting to maximum value helps because only limited and also cost precious energy.
For main point - the image quality:
Here I was really positively surprised by what the EOS M provides especially with the 18-55er kit lens. Until recently I had an EOS 60D and the image quality of the EOS M holds as loose with. Great colors, sharp images even in the corners, ISO settings up to 3200 used without any problems. When printing to 18x13cm or with post processing and ISO 6400 is to use yet.
Little exhilarating course, is the deal criticized autofocus speed. With the supplied firmware V1.0.6 the EOS M can be a lot of time. So Firmware V2.0.2 draufgespielt and ... as different as day and night. Of course the Canon is not reached so that the speed of current Panasonic G-models or the Nikon 1-Series. But for people who are not just sports photography now operate perfectly adequate.
The lack of a built-in Speedlight can I find bearable. The APS-C sensor and higher ISO values from the same part. In addition, yes into an easily storable in flash when the camera is.
The battery stamina could be a little higher. Because yes photographed permanently via the display, it is advisable to have a second battery case. Nevertheless, recently a battery has with me for the duration of Tiergarten visit have sufficed (about 150 images and battery is not empty).
Also would be nice also to integrate WLAN been and the possibility to connect an electronic viewfinder - perhaps at the next EOS-M generation that is supposed rumored to be just around the corner. Also yes to a 18-135mm in planning his - would be interesting for me.
The video features I can not say unfortunately, because I only take pictures.
All in all I think the Canon for the money, what they !! currently !! costs loose should get 5 stars. Obtained using his EF / EF-S lenses further photographic quality at high-level DSLR, top processing and the option adapter. By the way, my DSLR equipment comes currently from Nikon and I have decided for the Canon EOS M and against the Nikon 1 Series -'m still so obsessed neither by Canon, Nikon.
