Etta is almost 83 years old and has a heart's desire: They want to see the sea. Therefore, it breaks on an early morning on, only with a little food and a change of clothes and a rifle, around 2000 miles to the water to drain. Her husband Otto should make a farewell note back, because he would not let them go, and promises to think of returning. In the bag she has a list which helps her remember who she is and who else belongs to her family. Because Etta realizes that she begins to forget. With a few words she says goodbye to her neighbor Russell, who is at this early morning hour already on the field and who loves them both since their youth, before she married Otto. On the way to a coyote joins her to she calls him James, and he helps her find their way outdoors. While her husband Otto lets you drag and relies on their return, Russell gets worried to look for her. In addition to the scenes from the present time the author tells the life stories of Etta, Otto and Russell, begins with her childhood and youth, as initially Otto and Russell first met. Later Etta came into her life, first as a teacher and later her true love in the lives of both men. While Russell was unable to go to war, because he had a disability in the leg, Otto experienced the war years on the front line and sent letters to Etta from there. With a lot of empathy gradually, the lives of these people is rolled up, it gradually becomes clear as it could be that both men fell in love with Etta Etta and could not decide who she loved more of both. There are strong characters that can arise before our eyes Emma Hooper, revive the old times again and this sometimes sad, sometimes come along funny how life equally plays. Not enjoyed the end, it has made me completely hanging in the air, because it came as such a surprise and a solid promise breaks, so I can not understand it. Therefore a star deduction from me. The story seems written with a light hand, so that I could forget when reading fast that I have read the book in the original language. The author goes with their protagonists to very sensitive, they are not designated, but holds no uncertain terms what has happened, the reader can make his own thoughts about what happened. If you can admit that it is rather unusual at least, when a 82 year old woman with early-stage dementia alone over 2000 miles across country travels, while no one will act in order to protect them against emerging threats, then the book a lot of fun. Who would not wish for, nor to fulfill a lifelong dream at an advanced age, just go straight on to do something you've always wanted to do? This makes the book particularly worth reading and I can recommend it therefore despite the unsatisfactory (for me) end with a clear conscience.
