The Quintet of Shelly Manne was recorded for 3 consecutive nights, from 22 to 24 September 1959, the Black Hawk club in San Francisco. The reissue of this service includes five CDs. These records show how Shelly Manne was one of the best and most influential drummers in the history of modern jazz. Shelly Manne is a drummer who is not in the sham, almost no solo, but practice the battery as a separate instrument. This training, although it is not as regular as leader (with trumpeter Joe Gordon and tenor saxophonist Richie Kamuca, pianist Victor Feldman and bassist Monty Budwig) gives us a high quality bebop. The clean and precise strikes Manne to the drum, the excellent chemistry between the sax and trumpet Kamuca Richie Joe Gordon, gives us much pleasure. The solos are flying high. The special atmosphere in the club is well rendered in different albums.Du Vol.1 to Vol.5 all discs are perfect. Two particulères mentions, one to this excellent tenor saxophonist Richie Kamuca what too few registered; the other too unknown to Joe Gordon. Highly recommended for jazz fans but also those who want to learn. Guaranteed fun.
