1. The design and concept is not well thought out. The keyboard unit can indeed be packed separately, so you can easily remove the display at any time. However, there is a tab on the base case, which is fasten with two snaps on the display cover. This is not bad by itself, but it does not need this tab, as the display is anyway firmly connected to the base.
The tab would have on the third part, I call it cover, used a lot more, so you can close the complete package.
Ansich the lid is already useful if you are traveling alone with the tablet. But even then you have no way to close the folded envelope anyway.
There is no obstructive reason that limits the functionality, but an error in the design, for there would have been a far better option.

Without pocket there is just 1mm space, with cover about 3mm.

3. Without pocket hinge ensures that the bottom of the laptop in the unfolded state is just clear of the ground, which ensures good air circulation.
