Rush received a lot of scolding, by the critics anyway, but also by their loyal fans for this album. Rush had clear away with this album from hard rock sound and synthesizers now gave priority. Guitarist Alex Lifeson was therefore sent to the back, which was not exactly conducive to the interaction of these three outstanding musicians. On the other hand it did rush to make a concept album with considerable depth. The lyrics of drummer Neil Peart, the act of fear, self-doubt and abandonment, Rush have an adequate musical realization found. The songs do not sound sad, but sometimes very aggressively. The little-known "Kid Gloves" is the highlight of the album. Although the texts sometimes seem somewhat forced and two less successful songs are so Rush is with this album but a compliment to do.
