In particular, for the filming with my Canon EOS 600D I wanted even an extreme wide-angle, but of course I use the lens is also very happy for photography. In many areas, I prefer old manual lenses, but because the APS-C format is practically just barely 15 years old, there is no such material, and extreme wide-angle lenses for full frame deteriorate naturally with the crop factor of 1.6x a 600D to normal wide-angle lenses.
So I've been looking for an affordable current lens, and ultimately, the choice for a Canon limited here to the Sigma 10-20 F4,0-5,6 and the Tamron 10-24 F3.5-4.5. For everything else you have to again at least 200 on top place (or for sale). Not a big selection so. Priced there is no essential difference (except by price fluctuations due). I have read quite extensively test results and user opinions and it has been extraordinary (!) Clearly endorsed that Sigma is considered better.
Of course, the Tamron, like the other alternatives, minimally brighter. But just at an extreme wide-angle that is to get over the most likely for me. Whether landscape, architecture and street photography, with the wide-angle I want to achieve a high depth of field generally, so I hide anyway always something off.
In addition, it is relatively compact and lightweight with 83x81mm and 470g and is suitable for smaller my tripod, which was very important for me.
IMAGE QUALITY:
The best imaging performance achieved between the lens aperture f / 5.6 and f / 11th In this area, I am very satisfied with the picture quality. Above and below, ie at f 4 (10mm) and a total of from aperture 16, however, a much weaker picture quality. Color and contrast but as to be expected over the entire region as well.
The sharpness, I would generally rate a 7 out of 10 at f 5.6 to 11. Otherwise rather with 5-6. Of course it would be great if the image quality might even convince at Nahbetrachtung Image Areas, because in wide angle shots, there is naturally a rule theoretically much detail to discover. For the resolution of the sigma is not enough completely, especially as regards border areas.
Chromatic aberrations are generally somewhat problematic with wide angle lenses, but the Sigma surprised me positively in this regard. Photographed wisely they should at most might attract negative attention at Nahbetrachtung and here is as mentioned total image quality is no longer in any case so appealing.
A significant distortion is only at and near 10 mm focal length and can be seen only in the extreme (!) Margins. Otherwise, straight lines are really wonderful moment. For my needs, the lens is thus suitable not only for landscaping but also for architectural photography, unless you can pass to a wide area by border areas important lines. For a comparison with standard zoom lenses (eg, lenses 18-55) at 18-20mm wins the Sigma 10-20 with left (purely in terms of distortion).
The vignetting is quite strong at full aperture, and otherwise significantly dimmed still quite pronounced. In my view, vignetting normally (at least for me) not soo great relevance, although it should be noted that this is a weak point of the lens.
The lens has 6 diaphragm blades, the bokeh I do not like so much, but it is also not so crucial aspect of a wide-angle for me.
HOUSING QUALITY:
The case makes a high quality impression and seems to me perfectly processed. A plastic housing that comes into my view of the weight in this case definitely opposed, even though I usually prefer a robust metal housing.
Zoom and focus ring are rubberized and sufficiently wide. I would use neat and precise as neither smooth nor stiff describe (somewhere in the middle), but they can be in any case. When Zoom driving a tube from the housing, but only slightly more than one centimeter.
The focus includes I think about 140 ° rotation. However, there are no hard stops, but just a slight click and slight resistance when reaching the distance limits, the ring can however still continue to rotate, which is sub-optimal for follow focus.
The autofocus works as you'd expect: fast, quiet and reliable. He is clearly audible, but the sounds are rather low frequency, so they do not bother me. Even with difficult subjects or light focusing almost always succeed. I have no problems with front, back or break-Focus. In addition, you can also manually focus using the autofocus, what I'm really welcome.
An image stabilizer does not exist.
ACCESSORIES:
Accessories include a lens hood and a storage bag. The bag is relatively bulky and almost square in shape. The side walls of the bag are hardly padded and the passage of a fastening strap is sewn on, instead of being secured with a Velcro fastener or the like. Overall, the bag is therefore not likely to be mounted on the outside for example, photo backpacks or carry on belts. As Objektivköcher it is overall not as well suited.
CONCLUSION:
Is really cheap an extreme wide angle for APS-C did not get, but who still want to spend relatively little as possible gets to the Sigma 10-20 F4,0-5,6 still a very good lens. It is excellent in any way, but has at the same time no serious weaknesses. Therefore, in view of the price of the target group in my opinion the perfect choice.
