"MP 14" and "moderate resolution"? Yep, the 14 MP are simply fake. Waste of space. The "real" resolution, I would be somewhere around the 5 MP settle (perhaps it would be even 7 MP when the software would not expect the broken images in the scanner). On the other hand many unnecessary pixels and is hidden color noise have the advantage that the images well processed and color / contrast / etc. can be corrected without exhibiting streaking. And if you then down converted and easily nachschärft see the results even from very tidy.
In this respect, the 14 MP is a significant advance compared to all similar models with fewer pixels (probably all originate from the same Chinese manufacturer, I have a 5-MP-copy on the Reflecta draufsteht, but its accessories are compatible with ION, and the Software also looks nearly identical from).
The ION has the way (compared to the older model Reflecta) a not to be underestimated new feature: You can fix the brightness of the scan from -2 to +2 EV, ie make darker or lighter scan. What in some designs already quite sufficient to get the contrast ratio of a slide in the scan (around afterwards in the image processing, the shadows and highlights readjust). But what is thus especially possible: HDR scans! And so I could properly scan vulgar and extremely high contrast slides and achieve good results amazing.
And that's ultimately the reason for the 5 stars: The colors in slide scans. The colors are indeed tend to heavily saturated in the JPEGs, but that can be easily corrected (and better than low saturation or completely wrong color). But they tend to vote (every now and then spins the automatic white balance of the built-in software, but even that can be generally correct well). In negative scans all not true, but also that can be put finished on a passable level; So go to the emergency.
Oh yes, the cut will be slightly smaller than the slide frame itself. Too bad, but inherently difficult to avoid (otherwise one would have always somewhere black edges in the image, which would have to be cut afterwards). But is definitely still in the frame, I think.
What a pity. This handling, these colors and real (!) 8 or 10 MP resolution (less destructive software) would be awesome. Then play with a bit more expensive. Let's see, maybe it's next year (2015) to the extent
PS: Why not get a better "real" scanner? Because a) are snoring slowly and b) need a PC or Mac, and c bring) obscure driver (with the usual Kompatiblitätsproblemen when a new version of the operating system comes) and terrible scanning software. No thanks. When ION I stick purely an SD card, do quickly my scans (the scanner itself needs for about 2 to 3 seconds per slide), the card reader then in my iPad and can edit the images (I use for Pro HDR to merge two HDR-scans, and Photo Gene for brightness, contrast, shadows, highlights, color saturation, white balance, etc. and sharpening; would, in principle, with iPhoto, but Photogene gives me more control and more refined options).
