Unwrapped, battery fully charged (by the way was quite quickly under recommended in the manual 3 hours) and immediately tried to befriend it with Garmin on my PDA. Well, there was already the first sobering surprise: While Garmin found the receiver without problems, combined with this also, wanted from him but partout not acquire satellites. "Satellite to search" was the only life indicator, to which I could move my software, although just signaled the moment the receiver itself to continuous satellite reception by constant green glow.
Strange, I thought, and encircle the point of failure tried two other GPS programs and lo and behold - it worked! Google Maps recognized the Jentro immediately and showed right away on my (right) position on the map. GPS Utilities by Efficasoft which also provides technical information on the connection to the receiver setup, could do with this GPS a bit, though: Even though my current coordinates were displayed by the program properly, the visual satellite radar was also empty - as with Garmin also.
Basically, so I can see at the time that the GPS receiver itself was functional, but for some reason very picky when it comes to cooperation with the navigation software.
So what do in such a case? Correct: Googling. No sooner said than done - already the second link in the results list for the keyword combination "garmin xt Jentro" brought the explanation. To put it briefly, and for non-GPS protocol specialists to summarize:
This irrecord was actually tuned to the Falk Active Pilot (with which it was previously only sold in a bundle) and therefore sends to the software apparently only the GGA and RMC subprotocols the NMEA protocol. More does not need the Falk also Google Maps behaved in my case like Nokia Maps and the Vorrezensenten came with only these 2 sub-protocols probably prima cope. But my Garmin Mobile was with this (plan by the manufacturer well in goodwill) and therefore not satisfied Protokollkastrierung also refused to cooperate with the Jentro.
Solution: If described in sufficient detail in the above-mentioned link. In short: you have to unlock by a (freely available) Software (SiRFDemo) among the remaining logs to the receiver, so that it also works with any Navisoftware. Sounds perhaps a bit complicated, but it really is not as long as one does not leave the solution path and described in the notes concerning. As baud rate respects the reprogramming (57600). Having durgeführt this procedure, the Emfpfänger worked well behaved with Garmin Mobile.
My personal overview of pros and cons to this device:
+ Light weight, attractive design
+ Finds satellites quickly
+ Fast loading times
+ Stable Bluetooth communication
+ Good value for money (not here be understood ;-))
- Work in the factory setting is not with any navigation software (is also the main reason why I forgive only 3 out of 5 stars)
- Soldered battery, not interchangeable
- The display of the signal diode is hardly recognizable in daylight
- Use the lanyard is not to fix without tricky dexterity on the instrument
Model designation of the manufacturer: BT-GPS-8U JENTRO S3-04
