Paradoxically, it is not about the great works that one will necessarily satisfied.
- The symphonies by Masur are quality, but it may be preferred to Karajan, Bernstein, or Haitink (with the LSO, 2006).
- The piano concertos by Gulda are very good, but is it provided to miss Radu Lupu, this master?
- For string quartets, it would be a shame to miss the integral by Talich.
- The violin sonatas suffer some seniority of registration (1957) ...
However piano sonatas (Gulda) and cello sonatas are really superb. Variations for piano by Brendel (early 1960) would not suffer their age for sound recording, and masterfully interpreted (a reference!). Trios, and works for wind instruments are very well made.
In terms of the presentation is very nice, orderly; one finds references to each record.
In conclusion nothing to regret in this case because it's still a compilation, comfortable price. The Beethoven fans simply have other records to complete their collection ...
