I bought the navigation device as the card's built-in my car now seven years old and a map update should cost about 300 euros - also the routing function is not really usable for storage. For several years I have used a TomTom 720, in which again decency a paid cards and the update for some time my wife uses. Furthermore I use for a geocaching Garmin Oregon 450th
I use a 16 GByte microSD card from SanDisk and it contains about 12 GB OpenStreetMap road maps.
Reasons why I have decided for the nüvi:
o Lifetime Map Updates
o use of OpenStreetMap - Maps
o recommendation of a friend who owns several devices from Garmin
o Various reviews
Technical Details:
o Firmware version 7.80
o Navteq map version 2013.30
o Openstreetmap AIO DACH 18/12/2012
Evaluating the machines:
++ Looks very chic, very thin, quite noble
++ Garmin Birds-Eye-View is very well suited to navigation
++ Good and clear route guidance
++ Excellent Touch Properties; very good and smooth operation
++ Use OpenStreetMap maps
++ Excellent voice control - that's really fun!
++ Very good and smooth map display
++ Very fast GPS Fix
+ Windshield mount well; good removal, no cable stuck necessary; something hakelig when inserting.
+ Geocaching GPX files can be placed directly into the GPX folder (and exactly the same files as in Oregon). All Geocaches are then (without description) reached as POI and searchable. Must be converted to additionally display an icon the GPX file to a Garmin POI file.
+ Virtually all functions can be used under Linux. I use Debian 6.0.5.
- EcoRoute (use without ecoRoute HD): Good idea - unfortunately some shortcomings: eco route without ecoRoute HD is nothing more than an indication of whether you drive current to a certain speed range - and for a speedometer is more appropriate. With fuel-saving the whole has little to do.
- Speeding logs starting from 1 km / h fast; not configurable; even with cruise control, there are typically variations of + - 2 km / h.
- No selection which POIs should be displayed and which are not (with Tomtom there is a list that I miss here)
- Display very susceptible to fingerprints (a lens cloth or the like should always be within reach)
Note: The older firmware versions 7.20 and 7:50 are very unstable: boot about every 100km - and especially when departing from the proposed route (ie when the device you most need it). The calculation of routes takes with Firmware Version 7:50 partially several minutes. These issues are resolved with firmware version 7.60.
What I want:
o Voice control everywhere - and not just limited to a menu.
Not tested / not needed:
o Bluetooth voice connection to the mobile phone
o Data Link for Cell Phone
Assessment of supplied Navteq map:
I realize that a map of millions of records there - however I've found many, some annoying bug:
- Wrong number of motorway exit
- Routes lead car down stairs
- Wrong Turn Arrow
- Advertising in the map. Obviously, sponsored, among others, banks and fast food card and / or Garmin: the situation of the respective stores and restaurants will be highlighted almost intrusive. This really does not have to be a device in this price range!
- Faulty Geschwindingskeitsangaben
--- The device is reproducible with the Navteq map not the shortest route. (As soon as I turn on the map OpenStreetMap, which works fine, so I think that is a card problem.)
Fortunately all these problems have been encountered in maps areas where I know my way around.
Assessment with OpenStreetMap map (see also the set of my screenshot) - this is not included in the overall assessment, as this card is not included.
++ Very current and accurate
+ - Very detailed: very good orientation ability - thereby also slow the display assembly.
- No additional photos / Abbie assistants
- No way via voice control addresses to search
- No speed information
Overall: For the navigation device four stars, for the cards two star. So in total: three stars.
