Somewhere Down the Road (Audio CD)

Customer Review

This album is a current production in 2010 of the English songwriter Ralph McTell, the one in the general public wg. "Streets of London" knows. This classic style of English folk is at new recordings always a bit difficult because you have to avoid the risk of excessive traditionalism, but it also must not become too modern for fans of this music. McTell creates here quite terrific. The songs are definitely folky, but not sound traditional, but for timeless songs that could pass for a high-quality songs in different arrangement and a bit different rhythm. The melodic lines and musical ideas are mature, professional and quality and produce but one or two catchy. An absolute recommendation for fans of modern English folk and a significant development of its classical works. The absolute hit is his voice. Which has always been beautiful and has evolved sensational aged. Their natural euphony has enriched itself with the interesting and complex depths of a good wine stored or well and hung from ham. Really great and alone worth hearing.

One can argue about the lyrics. The poetic beauty can judge only conditionally as non-native speakers, but for me all sounds from textual Rhtymus, rhyme and Klanschönheit her very high. That's not a great poetry, but purely onomatopoeic very high quality songwriting. But the content and of the used images here it is a bit too ordinary: A string of beautiful, but 'classical' and almost a bit meaningless images where the thematic difference between the individual songs not necessarily be equal to clear. An example from the theme song: "I'll see you somewhere down the road, through the hourglass the sand has flowed; time for moving on; do not ask where it's gone; maybe it is somewhere down the road" and in a another song: "No money in my pocket, but a cigarette in my mothg; no fixed destination, 'cept some vague direction south; a bed roll on my shoulder; a guitar for comapany; some Woody Guthrie songs; and the road in front of me "- certainly not the CD that accompanies a through life, but very, very nice and very, very high.
